College Top 25 (Feb. 29)
Florida won its annual showdown series with Sunshine State rival Miami to stay at No. 1 in the latest Baseball America Top 25 rankings, powered by Louisville Slugger.
Behind the Gators, this week’s ranking have the first major shakeups of the new season. Louisville’s series loss at Mississippi opened the door for Texas A&M to slide up to No. 2 and Oregon State to No. 3, while the Cardinals check in at No. 4. Defending national champion Virginia was also upset at home by East Carolina, allowing Vanderbilt to enter the top five as the Cavs dropped to No. 8.
Three teams made big moves up the rankings. The aforementioned Rebels jumped from No. 21 to No. 13 with the series win against Louisville. After a dominant 3-0 weekend at the Shriners College Classic in Houston, Texas Christian climbed into the top 10 at No. 9, an eight-spot move from No. 17. Finally, North Carolina scored its second straight series win against a ranked opponent, Oklahoma State at home this weekend after winning two of three at UCLA previously, to move up to No. 12. The Tar Heels had been unranked in the preseason.
Two teams entered the rankings this week. Undefeated Arkansas, which also had a strong showing in Houston, checks in at No. 17. East Carolina also enters the rankings at No. 25 after that series win in Charlottesville. Kentucky and Oklahoma fell out of the rankings.
