College Stat Roundup: Funkhouser Gaining Steam

Here’s a look at how the college players ranked on Baseball America’s Top 100 Draft Prospects fared this past weekend.

• Louisville RHP Kyle Funkhouser continued his return to form this weekend with 10 strikeouts in seven strong innings against Wake Forest. Funkhouser has regained 2-4 mph of velocity he was missing early in the season. He sat 88-91 mph early in the season, prompting scouts to say that if he wasn’t a high-round pick a year ago, he’d a senior sign. Now he’s sitting 91-94 mph and touches 96. His breaking ball has also sharpened as he’s regained arm speed. His bonus demands will play a role in where he’s picked but Funkhouser is once again looking like a potential first-day pick.

• Kent State LHP Eric Lauer continues to roll. Lauer lowered his ERA to 0.76 with 5 1/3 scoreless innings against Western Carolina. If the season ended today, Lauer’s 0.76 ERA would better the 0.78 by Oregon State’s Ben Wetzler (now Ben Holmes) for the best ERA by a starting pitcher in Division I this century. Lauer’s ERA does come with a caveat–seven of the 15 runs allowed are unearned runs–but he has not allowed an earned run in nine of his 14 starts.

• Oregon LHP Matt Krook did not pitch during the weekend series for a second consecutive week. Krook has battled control troubles all season but those problems reached a pinnacle in a zero-out, two-walk, two-run outing against Arizona State on May 7. Since then the Ducks have limited Krook to midweek appearances as they try to get him back on track. He walked seven in 2 2/3 innings against Gonzaga on May 9, but he had a more positive outing this week. Krook pitched two scoreless innings against Portland on May 17, walking one, striking out two and allowing one hit.

• Mississippi State RHP Dakota Hudson blanked Arkansas as he put together his second consecutive complete-game shutout. Hudson had shut out Auburn the week before.

• It wasn’t a particularly loud weekend for Mercer OF Kyle Lewis (2-for-9), but Lewis did break the school record for walks in a season. With 61 free passes, Lewis leads the nation. At one point this year, Lewis had a 48-game on-base streak and he had a 15-game hitting streak come to an end on Sunday.

• In a matchup of top center fielders, Auburn CF Anfernee Grier hit two home runs in a 3-for-9 weekend but it was Vanderbilt’s Bryan Reynolds who stood out. Reynolds went 5-for-11 with a triple, a home run and a stolen base.
