Cody Bellinger, Yonder Alonso Mash Way To Weekly Honors
A pair of first basemen, one a former top prospect and one a current top prospect, are taking home player of the week awards.
Dodgers outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger was named the National League Player of the Week and and Athletics first baseman Yonder Alonso was named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending May 7, Major League Baseball announced on Monday.
Bellinger, 21, hit .429 (9-for-21) with eight runs, a double, a triple, three home runs, 12 RBIs and a stolen base over five games in just his second week in the big leagues. The Dodgers No. 1 prospect finished the week with a multi-home run game on Friday and a grand slam on Saturday at San Diego to become the first Dodger in the modern era to hit five homers in his first 11 games.
Alonso, 30, hit .409 (9-for-22) with five runs scored, a double, five home runs and 10 RBI over six games to claim his first career Player of the Week Award. The week included the first multi-home run game of his career on Saturday against Detroit. The four-time BA Top 100 prospect has already tied his career-high for home runs in a season (9) and is on pace to set a new career-high in slugging percentage by more than 100 points.
