Charlotte Stone Crabs’ Game Called Due To Broken Nets
Monday night’s Charlotte Stone Crabs game against Daytona game was postponed without a cloud in the sky or rain in the forecast.
A game in the Florida State League getting banged for weather is a normal occurrence, but the Stone Crabs’ game was scrapped due to insufficient protective netting.
According to the Stone Crabs, the netting and support structure behind home plate has been “compromised.” With repairs not expected to be completed in time for tonight’s game, the team had to postpone.
The net behind home plate came falling down during the game on Saturday night. Jupiter catcher Roy Morales caught a foul pop right at the net, leaning into the net as he caught the ball. He managed to apparently exceed the weight limit of the rope holding the net up, as it snapped, bringing the entire net to the ground.

“This is a new one apparently for anyone associated with baseball,” Charlotte general manager Jared Forma said. “Certainly no one had ever seen it before. Thankfully no one was hurt.”
In addition to Saturday’s net suspension, Friday night’s game had been suspended because of rain. To get the games in the Stone Crabs played Sunday’s resumed doubleheader on the complex’s back fields, with limited seating and complimentary hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and drinks for the fans who showed up.
Forma said that it looks like the nets will be fixed in time for Tuesday’s game against Daytona. If that game goes as scheduled the two teams will make up Monday’s game with a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Weird baseball is nothing new for the Stone Crabs. A couple of years ago, the team came back from a road trip to find a new visitor in the dugout.
