Carolina League All-Star Game
As all-star rosters are announced, we’ll provide full details and a look at which prospects are most worthy of your attention.
Carolina League All-Star Game
When: June 20.
Where: Haley Toyota Field, Salem, Va.
Prospects To Watch:
Triston McKenzie, RHP, Lynchburg (Indians): The lithe righthander has dominated the Carolina League all season long. McKenzie, 19, has struck out a league-best 90 hitters in 69.2 innings. He’s done so primarily with a mid-90s fastball and a hammer 12-to-6 curveball. The Indians’ supplemental first-rounder two years ago has also permitted just 38 hits and should be moving to Double-A Akron shortly after the all-star festivities.
Victor Robles, OF, Potomac (Nationals): One of the best prospects in the game, Robles can showcase five above-average or better tools. His only knock at this point is being able to stay on the field. At his best, Robles is a true center field with an above-average arm and the potential to impact the game on both sides of the ball. He’s hitting .282/.378/.492 this season with six home runs and 20 RBIs.
Ryan Mountcastle, SS, Frederick (Orioles): He’ll be the DH in this game, but Mountcastle has made a strong mark with his bat all season long. The 20-year-old has swatted 12 home runs so far this season, good for third in the Carolina League, one behind teammate Austin Hays, who will also play in the all-star game. There are questions about Mountcastle’s defense, but he has the potential for offensive impact no matter where he plays.
Jake Gatewood, 1b, Carolina (Brewers): Gatewood’s breakout season has stuck out even on a team full of some the Brewers’ brightest prospects. The former shortstop has moved to first base this year, got contact lenses, and is now mashing the ball. He’s cooled off a little bit in June, but his 21 doubles are second in the league and he’s got nine homers and 33 RBIs as well.
Eloy Jimenez, of, Myrtle Beach (Cubs): After a late start to the year, Jimenez has performed well enough to merit a spot on the all-star team. Jimenez has some of the best raw power in the minors, and his shows in batting practice are the stuff of legend in the Carolina League. He’s already dropped six bombs in 80 at-bats and has put up a gaudy .402 on-base percentage and walked more (15 times) than he’s struck out (14).
