California vs. Carolina League All-Stars Unveiled

The West Coast is about to get a close look at one of baseball’s top prospects.

Red Sox second baseman Yoan Moncada, ranked the No. 3 prospect in the BA Top 100, was selected for the Carolina League all-star team announced Wednesday by the league office.

The 20th annual California vs. Carolina League all-star game is set for June 21 at The Diamond in Lake Elsinore, Calif., home of the Storm, the Padres’ high class A affiliate.

Moncada, who plays for the Red Sox’s affiliate in Salem, leads the minor leagues with 34 steals and is tied for first with 51 runs scored. The 21-year old Cuban switch-hitter is hitting .299/.421/.485 through 55 games entering Wednesday.

The Indians were the most represented franchise with six selections from their affiliate in Lynchburg, including lefthander Justus Sheffield and first baseman Bobby Bradley, both of whom are in the BA Top 100. Sheffield, ranked No. 81, was the Indians’ first-round pick in 2014 and is 4-2, 3.10 in 11 starts. Bradley, No. 93 in the Top 100, leads the league with 14 home runs and is tied for the minor league lead with 51 RBIs.

The other Lynchburg representatives are shortstop Yu-Cheng Chang, the Indians’ No. 14 prospect, outfielder Greg Allen, Cleveland’s No. 28 prospect, catcher Daniel Salters and righthander Julian Merryweather.

Other notable selections include outfielder Andrew Stevenson, the Nationals’ No. 8 prospect, and third baseman Drew Ward, the Nationals’ No. 16 prospect, from Potomac. Myrtle Beach righthanders Trevor Clifton and Jake Stinnett, the Cubs’ Nos. 18 and 21 prospects, respectively, are on the pitching staff.

Winston-Salem righthander Matt Cooper, who leads the minors with 92 strikeouts in 72 2/3 innings, joins them on the staff.

The Giants, whose affiliate is in San Jose, led the way for the California League with four selections. Righthander Sam Coonrod, the Giants No. 6 prospect, entered Wednesday 5-3, 2.26 and is a strong candidate to start on the mound for the Cal League. He is joined on the staff by teammate Rodolfo Martinez, who leads the league with 16 saves and has a 0.74 ERA.

First baseman Chris Shaw, the Giants’ first-round pick a year ago out of Boston College, made the team after hitting .291 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs through 52 games. Shortstop C.J. Hinojosa rounds out the Giants selections after posting a .330 batting average. BA recently profiled Hinojosa here.

The host Storm will also have four players in the game. Relief pitchers Colby Blueberg and Brad Wieck and infielders Luis Urias and Josh VanMeter will represent the Padres affiliate on their home field. Urias, the youngest player in the league on opening day at 18, is hitting .317/.382/.400. Righthander Dinelson Lamet was also selected for the team but won’t participate after being promoted to Double-A.

Bakersfield’s Kyle Petty, who is tied for the minor league-lead with 79 hits, joins pitchers Tyler Herb and Kyle Schepel as Mariners selections, while Rockies No. 15 prospect Ryan Castellani joins reliever Jerry Vasto and outfielder Omar Carrizales from Modesto. Modesto lefthander Sam Howard was also selected but won’t play.

Other notable all-star selections include Dodgers No. 17 prospect Josh Sborz from Rancho Cucamonga, Rangers No. 28 prospect Travis Demeritte from High Desert, and Astros catching prospect Garrett Stubbs from Lancaster.
