LONG BEACH—The Brewers closed out their unbeaten run at the 2016 Area Codes with a 8-6 win over the Reds on Wednesday.
The Brewers, representing Southern California, came back to win just a couple of hours after their historic no-hitter. They finished Area Code action with four wins and a tie in five contests.
Calvin Mitchell (Rancho Bernardo High, San Diego) hit the game-winning, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
“I was thinking of staying calm and keeping my breath,” Mitchell said of his at-bat. He added that this summer, he wanted to focus on getting past bad at-bats.
Chase Farrell (Valencia (Calif.) High) struck out the side in two straight innings for the Brewers. He said the biggest lesson he learned from the Area Code Games was to keep the ball down against quality hitters.
BA’s Hudson Belinsky noted that Farrell used an upper-80s fastball and a tight slider to get strikes.
Boyd Vander Kooi (Skyline High, Mesa, Ariz.) went 2-for-3 for the Reds with one RBI. Joseph Cantillo (Kailua, Hawaii) had two scoreless innings and had three strikeouts in the losing effort.
