Bregman Highlights Texas League All-Stars
The Texas League all-star game will feature one heck of a double-play combination.
Athletics second baseman Franklin Barreto and Astros shortstop Alex Bregman, the No. 35 and 42 prospects, respectively, highlight the Texas League all-star rosters.
The game is set for June 28 at Hammons Field, in Springfield, Mo., home of the Cardinals’ Double-A affiliate.
Bregman and Barreto will both start for the South Division squad. Bregman, last year’s No. 2 overall draft selection, is hitting a league-leading .311 with 13 homers, 42 RBI and a .999 OPS for Corpus Christi, the Astros affiliate. He is Houston’s No. 3 prospect.
Barreto, Oakland’s No. 1 prospect, is hitting .229 with five homers and 29 RBI for Midland. He is one of three Midland players in the South’s starting lineup, joining third baseman Matt Chapman, the Athletics No. 3 prospect, and catcher Beau Taylor.
Other notable players on the South Division roster include pitcher David Paulino and starting outfielder Derek Fisher, the Astros Nos. 7 and 9 prospects, from Corpus Christi; Frisco outfielder Ryan Cordell, the Rangers’ No. 11 prospect; and San Antonio shortstop Jose Rondon, the Padres’ No. 5 prospect.
The Dodgers had a game-high nine selections from their affiliate in Tulsa selected to the North roster. They include Willie Calhoun, their No. 13 prospect, starting at second base, Drew Maggi starting at shortstop, and BA No. 100 prospect Alex Verdugo starting in the outfield.
Brock Stewart, one of four Tulsa pitchers selected, will not participate after being promoted to Triple-A.
Host Springfield had six players selected, including three starters: catcher Carson Kelly, the Cardinals No. 11 prospect, outfielder Harrison Bader, their No. 16 prospect, and designated hitter Luke Voit. Infielder Paul DeJong, the Cardinals No. 17 prospect, is on the roster as a reserve.
