The series finale between the Dunedin Blue Jays and Clearwater Threshers ended early after outfielder Yeuni Muñoz was injured on a play at second base and had to be placed on a backboard and taken off the field on a cart.

With one out in the bottom of the fifth and Drew Jemison batting, Muñoz took off for second. Jemison struck out swinging, and catcher Jared Thomas’ throw tailed slightly toward first base. Second baseman Nikau Pouaka-Grego corralled it, then reached back and applied the tag to Munoz’s head. Munoz”s head appeared to hit the dirt.

Muñoz, who had slid into the bag feet first, then rolled over on his stomach and began rubbing the back of his head. Soon after, trainers from both teams came from each dugout to administer aid.

Eventually, Muñoz, a 20-year-old who was signed by Toronto in 2021 out of the Dominican Republic, was placed on a backboard, taken off the field on a cart and transported to the hospital.

Dunedin issued an update on Muñoz’s condition via Twitter.
