Best Of The Minors: Best Broadcaster Prospect
Jay Burnham | Richmond Flying Squirrels
Burnham started his career with the Hagerstown Suns and made stops with the independent Pensacola Pelicans, the Trenton Thunder and the Asheville Tourists before landing with the Flying Squirrels.
“Jay’s talent on the air is unquestionable. Yet, what separates Jay from the rest in this industry is how well he mirrors his everyday genuine personality with his broadcasting delivery. Five minutes into the first conversation I ever had with Jay, he had my attention captivated,” said Doug Maurer, the current Asheville Tourists broadcaster. “I thought to myself, ‘If this is how he carries a broadcast, then I had better maintain a professional relationship with him to learn as much as possible.’ It is and I have.”

WHAT OTHERS SAY
He’s a throwback. Jay is romantic about baseball on the radio. When we met 13 years ago he had all his possessions in a compact car. I mean, his bed was even in that car. Among his possessions was a subscription to XM Radio so he could listen to MLB broadcasts nationwide. He grew up on Ernie Harwell and Vin Scully. I believe he paints a better picture than anyone I have ever heard. — Will Smith, Staten Island Yankees

Jay brings a fun and creative element to the broadcast booth. He sometimes goes above and beyond baseball to make the broadcast that much more enjoyable to listen too. And he always has a great relationship with his broadcast partner where they seem to be on the same page at all times.” — Eastern League GM
