Thursday’s Stars
Rony Garcia, RHP, Tigers — Selected last winter in the Rule 5 Draft, Garcia was taken from the Yankees’ system, where he was blocked by a host of other righthanders, and inserted into a situation that could earn him a spot in the big leagues. In his final spring outing, Garcia whiffed a pair over two scoreless innings. He finishes his spring training having allowed two earned runs over 6.2 innings. He struck out seven and walked one.
Nate Pearson, RHP, Blue Jays — The arguable best pitching prospect in the game finished his spring with another stellar outing—and a win to boot—after striking out two over two innings of one-run ball. Overall, the owner of one of the best fastballs in the game struck out 11 over seven innings and allowed just two hits. He’s likely to see Toronto at some point this season, whenever it starts.
Estevan Florial, OF, Yankees — Few prospects are in bigger need of a rebound than Florial, who has missed chunks of time over the last two years with broken bones in his right wrist. When he’s been on the field, he’s suffered from a lack of strike-zone discipline and the corresponding timing issues that come with such long layoffs. He still has the raw tools to be a productive major leaguer—he went 1-for-2 on Friday—but needs to show some results this season, which will likely begin (at some point) in Double-A Trenton.
