Newsmakers from Friday’s action:

Christian Walker, 1b, Diamondbacks. After leading the minor leagues with 32 home runs this season, Walker got on the board with his first big fly in the major leagues this season. Pinch-hitting for reliever J.J. Hoover in the sixth inning, Walker hit the third of four Arizona homers on the evening. Chris Iannetta had a pair—including a grand slam—and slugger J.D. Martinez hit his 42nd. Walker’s only other big league homer came in 2014 with the Orioles, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2012 out of South Carolina.

Rafael Devers, 3b, Red Sox: Boston’s decision to promote Devers rather than acquire help at the deadline continues to look prudent. Their top prospect swatted a three-run jack last night in the Red Sox’s comeback win over the Reds that helped keep them comfortably ahead of the Yankees in the American League East wild-card race.

Cody Bellinger, 1b/of. Dodgers: Bellinger continued his assault on baseballs and the record books on Friday night when he mashed his 39th home run of the season. His 39 homers set a new record for rookies in the National League. He passed Wally Berger and Frank Robinson, who each hit 38 longballs in their rookie campaigns. He’s a slam dunk to join Corey Seager as back-to-back rookie of the year winners from the Dodgers.

Aaron Judge, of, Yankees: Like Bellinger, Judge continued doing what he does best on Friday night. The Bronx bomber vaporized his 46th home run of the year against the Blue Jays. The home run served as the only bright spot in an 8-1 loss in Canada.

Jimmie Sherfy, rhp, Diamondbacks: The Oregon grad toiled for 220.1 innings in the minor leagues before getting the call, but his persistence paid off. Now, he’s rewarding his team for its faith. Sherfy pitched 0.2 scoreless innings last night and has 9.2 shutout frames with just five hits and a walk against nine strikeouts to open his career.
