Baseball America Picks Our Favorite MiLB Copa De La Diversion Hats

As seen in the April edition of Baseball America Magazine, Minor League Baseball has announced a new look for a number of teams as part of the Copa De La Diversion initiative designed to embrace the culture and values that resonate most with participating teams’ local U.S. Hispanic/Latino communities. In all, 72 teams are participating in the 2019 edition, which translates to “Fun Cup,” which will feature unique logos and uniforms for each team. 

Here’s a special digital view into the magazine’s colorful display of all 72 team hats, along with some of our staff calling out their favorites: 

J.J. Cooper, Executive Editor: I’m a fan of New Hampshire’s Gatos Feroces. Good colors make a good looking cap (black and yellow and red) and this isn’t a cute and cuddly cat trying to act mean. This is a legitimately terrifying cat. Well done.

Matt Eddy, Executive Editor: I will go to bat for the home-state North Carolina teams in Charlotte and Durham. The Knights become the Caballeros with a knight astride a sugar skull horse against a stylish green backdrop. Durhams’ tri-color Mal de Ojo, or evil eye, logo is an attractive reinterpretation of the Bulls’ traditional markings.

Carlos Collazo, National Writer: It’s hard for a UNC alumn to not side with Chivos De Hartford, due to the color and logo being eerily similar to the Tar Heels. My runner up would be Mariachis De Nuevo Mexico thanks to a clean three-color look and striking logo.

Kyle Glaser, National Writer: Any time you can incorporate a Chupacabra, it’s a win. Round Rock honoring the legendary creature with a sleek design both colorful and fierce makes for a cap at its finest. Special mention to the Sacramento Dorados and their wrestling-mask logo and the San Jose Churros honoring the delectable treat.

Teddy Cahill, National Writer: Medusas de Lakewood is a winner for me. The meaning behind the five tentacles makes for a great message and I’m also very much here for a jellyfish swinging a baseball bat.

Justin Coleman, Associate Editor: My pick would be the Ocelotes de Greensboro. The colors contrast well, and the cat looks just fierce enough. Add the bat to the equation and I’m sold on it.
