LONG BEACH, Calif.—The A’s beat the Reds 4-1 to close out the opening day of the 2016 Area Code Games as A’s pitchers held the Reds to three hits in seven innings.
Troy Claunch (Vacaville (Calif.) High) started off the scoring with a three-run, bases-loaded double in the first inning for the A’s. Tate Soderstrom (Turlock (Calif.) High) added to the inning with an RBI, driving in Claunch.
Claunch said he looked for early pitches to drive but also emphasized the importance of getting a team win.
Despite the score, the Reds showcased a rotation of impressive arms, including 6-foot-6 lefthander Trevor Rogers (Carlsbad (N.M.) High) and righthander Jonathan Stroman (La Cueva High, Albuquerque, N.M.).
“If he hits it, he hits it,” Stroman said of his approach to attacking batters. “And if not, it gives me that much more confidence to throw the pitch again.”
Both teams are in action for Day Two of the Area Code Games starting Sunday at noon Pacific Time.
