1. Tyler Nevin, 1B, Rockies
Team: Salt River
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: .545/.643/1.091 (6-for-11), 1 R, 0 2B, 3 3B, 0 HR, 5 RBIs, 3 BB, 1 SO, 0-for-0 SB
The Scoop: After a strong but shortened season in the high Class A California League, Nevin is using his time in the AFL to prove his year wasn’t a Lancaster mirage. He’s one of two players this week with three triples, and his .467, .553 on-base percentage and .700 slugging percentage all lead the league.
2. Ronnie Dawson, OF, Astros
Team: Scottsdale
Age: 23
Why He’s Here: .412/.500/.882 (7-for-17), 2 R, 2 2B, 3 3B, 0 HR, 2 RBIs, 3 BB, 4 SO, 0-for-2 SB
The Scoop: Dawson is an above-average runner and showed off an interesting combination of power and speed with two doubles and three triples over the third AFL week. That trio of three-baggers vaulted him into a three-way tie at the top of the league’s leaderboard in that category.
3. Julio Pablo Martinez, OF, Rangers
Team: Surprise
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .375/.444/.813 (6-for-16), 4 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, 2 BB, 3 SO, 0-for-1 SB
The Scoop: The first-year professional got his name in the AFL record books this past week when he carded the first cycle of the season. That game also included a walk. He’s shown slash-and-burn capabilities during his time in the league, and has formed a blindingly quick duo at the top Surprise’s lineup with Royals outfield prospect Nick Heath.
4. Scott Blewett, RHP, Royals
Team: Surprise
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 6 SO, 0 BB, 0 HR
The Scoop: In a league full of promising arms, Blewett has been among the most dominant. He’s allowed one run over three starts, and has stymied hitters with a promising arsenal that includes a nasty, low 70s CB and a low-90s FB. After a subpar season at Double-A Northwest Arkansas, Blewett is regaining some of his prospect sheen.
5. Carter Kieboom, SS, Nationals
Team: Salt River
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .500/.588/.714 (7-for-14), 5 R, 0 2B, 0 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, 3 BB, 4 SO, 0-for-2 SB
The Scoop: Aside from Juan Soto’s sprint to the majors, Kieboom put together the most impressive season from a Nationals prospect. The 20-year-old ranked among the best prospects in both the Carolina and Eastern Leagues and was in his system’s top five in both home runs (16) and RBIs (69). He’s continuing that upward trend in the AFL.
