Arizona Fall League Hot Sheet (Nov. 11)
This edition of the Arizona Fall League Hot Sheet takes into account what AFL players did from Nov. 4-10.
Contributing: J.J. Cooper, Kyle Glaser and Vince Lara-Cinisomo.
1. Gleyber Torres, ss, Yankees
Team: Scottsdale
Age: 19
Why He’s Here: .667/.765/.917 (8-for-12), 5 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 5 BB, 1 SO, 1-for-1 SB
The Scoop: Torres has torn through the AFL since it began and had perhaps his best week yet this week. The vaunted Venezuelan posted three consecutive multi-hit games, reached base in 13 of his 17 plate appearances and made multiple highlight-worthy defensive plays at both shortstop and second base. 2. Ian Happ, 2b, Cubs
Team: Mesa
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .556/.692/1.111 (5-for-9), 5R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 4 BB, 4 SO
The Scoop: The switch-hitting Cincinnati product continued to mash from both sides of the plate, squaring up everything thrown to him and driving the ball with authority to both gaps. Happ has an .839 OPS batting from the right side and .876 OPS from the left this fall. (KG)
3. Cody Bellinger, 1b, Dodgers
Team: Glendale
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .417/.500/.833 (5-for-12), 6 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 2 BB, 3 SO
The Scoop: Bellinger is a Gold Glove-caliber first baseman, but he’s also played center field in Arizona as the Dodgers look to build his versatility. Los Angeles is looking for ways to get his smooth, lefthanded swing and power potential into its lineup, perhaps as soon as mid-2017. (VLC)
4. D.J. Stewart, of, Orioles
Team: Peoria
Age: 23
Why He’s Here: .375/.455/.750 (3-for-8), 1 R, HR, 3 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO
The Scoop: The 2015 first-round pick from Florida State has had a rough introduction to pro ball. The bat-first college outfielder struggled so much at low Class A Delmarva this year that the Orioles promoted him to high Class A Frederick just to see if a change of scenery would help. It did to an extent because Stewart has shown patience and occasional power in the AFL. He will have to hit a lot to provide value as a corner outfielder, so this week’s strong stretch is a positive takeaway. (JJC)
5. Austin Voth, rhp, Nationals
Team: Glendale
Age: 24
Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 SO
The Scoop: Voth delivered his second straight outing of five scoreless innings, inducing nine ground balls against only one fly ball in his most recent outing. The Washington state native previously relied on his 88-90 mph cut fastball and low-80s changeup to do most of the work, but he added a diving mid-70s curveball that is now consistently drawing swings and misses in the dirt. (KG)
6. Nick Gordon, ss, Twins
Team: Surprise
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: .438/.526/.625 (7-for-16), 5 R, 2B, 3B, 2 BB, 5 SO
The Scoop: Anyone expecting to see the speed burst or jaw-dropping defensive plays that Nick’s half-brother Dee makes will likely come away disappointed when watching the Twins’ No. 1 prospect. But seen over a longer period of time, Gordon’s steady competency does begin to stand out. He’s not a quick-twitch athlete, but he is a very well-rounded shortstop, which is exactly what he’s shown in a solid month in the AFL. (JJC)
7. Carson Kelly, c, Cardinals
Team: Glendale
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .467/.556/.800 (7-for-15), 4 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 5 RBIs, 3 BB, 0 SO
The Scoop: With Yadier Molina coming off another outstanding season and under team control through 2018, Kelly knows that he’s not going to be the Cardinals’ everyday catcher in in the next two seasons. But he has done what he can to show that he’s a viable backup option, learning at the side of one of the best catchers of all time. He’s a well-rounded catcher who is good enough defensively to play in the big leagues and has a chance to be more productive offensively. (JJC)
8. Andrew Stevenson, of, Nationals
Team: Glendale
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .409/.480/.545 (9-for-22), 5 R, 1 HR, 2 RBIs, 3 BB, 5 SO, 2-for-4 SB
The Scoop: Stevenson is playing above his profile as a speed-and-contact center fielder. He has seven extra-base hits among his 17 hits, including two homers after hitting just three all season. He’s also stolen seven bases in nine tries. One troubling aspect has been strikeouts. After whiffing 16 percent of the time during the season, he has struck out 18 percent of the time in the AFL. (VLC)
9. Christin Stewart, of, Tigers
Team: Salt River
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .333/.385/.667 (4-for-12), 4 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 0 HR, 1 RBIs, 0 BB, 3 SO
The Scoop: Stewart has hit only one homer in the AFL after belting 30 in the regular season. But he had his first positive signs this week with three extra-base hits. After a slow start in the AFL, he’s hitting .343 in the past 10 games with five walks. (VLC)
10. Chris Ellis, rhp, Braves
Team: Salt River
Age: 24
Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 SO, 1 BB
The Scoop: The former Mississippi starter had his best AFL start to date on Thursday, throwing four scoreless innings. Ellis is 1-1, 6.19 in the AFL and has run into the same issue he had in Triple-A, which is lack of consistent control. He has walked 12 in 16 innings. (VLC)
