July 30

Cardinals Acquire RHP Shawn Armstrong From Rays For OF Dylan Carlson

The Cardinals and Rays flipped a pair of depth big leaguers at the deadline, with the Cardinals acquiring righthanded reliever Shawn Armstrong from the Rays in exchange for former St. Louis top prospect Dylan Carlson. Armstrong has pitched better than his 5.40 ERA for the Rays this season through 46.2 innings, evidenced by a 3.76 FIP and 4.19 xFIP, but his fastball velocity has trended down and his walk rate has trended up in the last two seasons. Armstrong has started seven games for the Rays this year but primarily in a 1-2 inning opener role.

Carlson ranked as the Cardinals top prospect back in 2021 when he flashed a solid all-around game, but he’s never lived up to his prospect expectations and has been a part-time player in each of the last two seasons. This season he’s hit just .198/.275/.240 with a 26.8% strikeout rate as a bench player for the Cardinals and his -0.8 fWAR is the 14th-worst mark for any hitter with at least 100 plate appearances. He’s still just 25 and is under team control through the 2026 season but currently looks like little more than a switch-hitting bench piece.

Tigers Send OF Mark Canha To Giants For RHP Eric Silva

Detroit continued flipping veterans for prospects at this year’s deadline, and moved 35-year-old outfielder Mark Canha to the Giants in exchange for righthander Eric Silva, who ranked as the No. 25 prospect in San Francisco’s system. Canha will be a free agent after the 2024 season and is in the midst of his worst offensive season since 2017, with a .231/.337/.350 slash line and 94 OPS+ through 35 games though he has been productive against lefties (.857 OPS).

Silva signed for $1.5 million as a fourth-rounder out of high school in 2021 and was coaxed out of his commitment to UCLA with a signing bonus of nearly $1.5 million. He converted to a full-time reliever role this season after struggling as a starter in the lower levels of the minors. He has posted a 4.35 ERA over 41.1 innings as a late-inning reliever with Double-A Richmond. He’s shown excellent stuff throughout the course of his career but has rarely been able to translate it into results. He’s moved into a reliever’s role this year with Double-A Richmond, where he’s worked with a four-pitch complement led by a four-seamer that has peaked around 97 mph and a high-spin curveball in the low 80s. He’ll sprinkle in a changeup and slider as well, but his attack is mostly based around the fastball and curveball.

D-backs Nab Floro Before The Final Bell

The D-backs and Nats snuck a trade in right at the deadline, with Arizona acquiring RHP Dylan Floro in exchange for 3B Andres Chaparro. Floro, 33, owns a 2.06 ERA even despite not missing an overwhelming amount of bats out of the bullpen. Chaparro is big man who hits the ball very hard. He has a 90th percentile exit velocity of roughly 105 mph and a max EV of around 111 mph. With Triple-A Reno this season, he’s slammed 19 home runs and driven in 75 runs. The 25-year-old has spent most of his time this season at third base but his likely home in the major leagues would be across the diamond at first.

Phillies Send LHP Gregory Soto To Baltimore For 2 Pitching Prospects

The Orioles acquired lefthanded reliever Gregory Soto from the Phillies in exchange for No. 12 prospect RHP Seth Johnson and No. 24 RHP Moises Chace. Soto is in his age-29 season and is under team control for this season and 2025. He has posted a 4.08 ERA in 35.1 innings out of the pen for the Phillies this season with a 26.7% strikeout rate and 12.1% walk rate and helps Baltimore’s bullpen depth.

Johnson was the 40th overall pick in the 2019 draft by the Rays and was acquired by the Orioles in a three-team trade that sent Trey Mancini to the Astros and Jose Siri to the Rays. Johnson has pitched to a 2.63 ERA over 65 innings and 18 starts with Double-A Bowie this season and sits in the mid 90s with a plus fastball. Chace signed with the Orioles out of Venezuela and has taken a step forward this season. Through 52 innings and nine starts with High-A Aberdeen, the 21-year-old posted a 3.46 ERA and has flashed a loud fastball/changeup combination, though his command needs to improve.

Pirates, Orioles Swap Prospects

The Pirates and Orioles swapped prospects prior to Tuesday’s trade deadline, with Pittsburgh sending RHP Patrick Reilly to Baltimore in exchange for OF Billy Cook. Reilly, a Vanderbilt alum, was one of the Pirates’ bigger risers in our latest midseason update. Cook didn’t crack Baltimore’s deep Top 30 but provides a Pirates system short on close-to-the-majors bats with a viable option who could perhaps soon compete in a utility role.

Red Sox Add Another Reliever In RHP Luis Garcia

After acquiring RHP Lucas Sims earlier in the day, the Red Sox added 37-year-old Angels RHP Luis Garcia in exchange for a package of four prospects: SS/OF Matthew Lugo, 1B Niko Kavadas, RHP Yeferson Vargas and RHP Ryan Zeferjahn. Garcia is another dependable seventh or eighth-inning option for Alex Cora’a bullpen and is striking out 22% of batters compared to a 7.7% walk rate. Lugo is the only prospect ranked in Boston’s Top 30 (No. 23) and is on the upswing this season, cutting his chase rate and seeing better results, although it’s worth noting he has mostly played outfield this season after previously playing shortstop.

Padres Trade Enyel De Los Santos To Yankees

The Yankees added another bullpen arm late Tuesday afternoon, acquiring RHP Enyel De Los Santos from the Padres. San Diego also sent LHP Thomas Balboni to the Yankees. In return, New York sent OF Brandon Lockridge. De Los Santos owns a 4.46 ERA, although he has struggled in recent weeks.

Balboni was selected by San Diego in the 15th round of the 2022 draft. The Northeastern alum is in the midst of a repeat of Low-A Lake Elsinore, where he’d struck out 60 hitters in 34.1 innings. The 24-year-old throws his fastball in the mid 90s and backs it with a low-80s slider and a high-80s changeup. Lockridge is an excellent defensive center fielder who has bounced between Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre over the last three seasons. He makes plenty of contact and has speed that plays both on the bases and in the field. He hits the ball fairly hard but has elevated miss rates in the zone.

Padres Reinforce Pitching Depth By Acquiring Martin Perez

The Padres and Pirates linked on a small trade right before the deadline, as San Diego acquired LHP Martin Perez in exchange for LHP prospect Ronaldys Jimenez, according to Francys Romero. Jimenez signed with the Padres in June of 2023 but did not make his pro debut until July 13 of this season. He’s a smaller lefthander who works with a fastball that sits around 93 mph and a slider that comes in around 83 mph. He’s pitched three career games and has struck out eight hitters in six innings in the Dominican Summer League.

Kiermaier Gets World Series Shot With Dodgers

Kevin Kiermaier said prior to the deadline he intends to retire at the end of the season. Before that, he’ll get one last shot at a ring. The Dodgers reporteedly acquired Kiermaier in exchange for LHP Ryan Yarbrough, who the team DFA’d after acquiring Amed Rosario a day ago.

Tanner Banks Nets White Sox Top-10 Phillies Prospect

The Phillies traded LHP Tanner Banks to the White Sox and received SS William Bergolla. Banks, 32, provides Philadelphia another lefthanded option in the middle of the bullpen who could even provide multiple innings at a time. Bergolla, 19, ranked No. 10 in the Phillies system. The switch-hitter makes boatloads of contact, but without a ton of power so far, and is a sound defender with a chance to stick at shortstop.

Tigers Ship Jack Flaherty to Dodgers In Biggest Deal Of The Day

Though there were a lot of trades finalized on Tuesday, it can’t be said that many of them were very big trades. Still, the Dodgers did what the Dodgers do best and made a real splash when they agreed to send a pair of prospects to Detroit for lefthanded starter Jack Flaherty. Flaherty, who was moved from St. Louis to Baltimore at the deadline last season, was one of 2024’s most sought-after arms and should provide plenty of valuable innings for Los Angeles down the stretch and into the postseason. For his services, the Dodgers are reported to be parting ways with C Thayron Liranzo and SS Trey Sweeney. Both players ranked inside BA’s most recent Top 30 prospects update for LA, with the 21-year-old Liranzo landing all the way up at No. 3.

White Sox Trade Eloy Jimenez To Orioles In Curious Move

The White Sox agreed to trade OF/DH Eloy Jimenez to the Orioles, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Chicago will reportedly receive LHP Trey McGough in return in a move that appears to be primarily a salary dump. More to come…

Marlins Send Huascar Brazoban To Mets

Do the Marlins have any relievers left? They continued to deal bullpen pieces, sending Huascar Brazoban within the division to the Mets in exchange for 3B Wilfredo Lara, according to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com. The 20-year-old infielder did not rank in the Mets’ midseason Top 30, but is slashing .244/.349/.343 with four homers in 78 High-A games.

Buccos Bounty: Utility Infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa Headed To Pirates for OF Charles McAdoo

The Pirates continued to add late Tuesday afternoon, swinging a deal for Blue Jays do-it-all utility man Isiah Kiner-Falefa, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The return on the deal is reportedly Double-A OF Charles McAdoo. Kiner-Falefa will be a much-needed boost to a struggling Pirates lineup. Defensive versatility is a key part of his game. A one-time catcher, he’s capable of playing pretty solid or above-average defense pretty much anywhere. McAdoo, meanwhile, has been one of the more impressive surprises in the Pirates’ system in 2024. A 2023 13th-round pick out of San Jose State, McAdoo hit his way to Double-A Altoona by slashing .336/.415/.561 at hitter-friendly High-A Greensboro. He’s hit .269/.347/.490 since his promotion to Double-A Altoona.

Marlins Continue Sell-Off, Send Bryan De La Cruz To Pirates

One thing’s for sure: The Marlins came ready to deal at the deadline. Miami’s moves continued Tuesday with the agreement of a trade to send OF Bryan De La Cruz to the Pirates in exchange for a return that reportedly includes RHP Jun-Seok Shim and 3B Garret Forrester.

Shim, who is 20 years old and ranked 28th in BA’s most recent update of the Pirates’ Top 30 prospects, is the ultimate lottery ticket. The righthander, whom the Pirates signed out of South Korea in 2023, has pitched eight innings in the last two seasons. He dealt with pectoral muscle injuries last year and has missed all of this season with a shoulder injury. When healthy, he shows a 95-98 mph fastball, a high-spin curveball and a slider that was in the refinement process when he last got on the mound. Forrester was Pittsburgh’s third-round pick in 2023, out of Oregon State. The righty hitter has missed about two months this year on the injured list and had just been promoted to High-A Greensboro at the time of the deal.

Mets Set To Acquire RHP Tyler Zuber

The Rays agreed to traded RHP Tyler Zuber to the Mets in exchange for RHP Paul Gervase, according to MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo. Gervase, 24, did not rank on the Mets’ midseason Top 30, but has 46 strikeouts over 27.2 innings of relief for Double-A Binghamton this year and ranked as the No. 330 prospect in the 2022 MLB Draft.

Padres Land Big Fish, Acquire Tanner Scott From Marlins For Package Of Prospects

Arguably the best remaining healthy relief option on the market is now headed to San Diego. The Padres are finalizing a trade for LHP Tanner Scott from the Marlins, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. They will reportedly also land RHP Bryan Hoeing. In exchange, San Diego is sending LHP Robby Snelling, RHP Adam Mazur, INF Graham Pauley and INF Jay Beshears, according to MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola. It’s a high-volume return featuring a pair of pitchers (Snelling and Mazur) who have spent time on the Top 100 this year, but are not presently Top 100 Prospects. Snelling was Baseball America’s 2023 Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

Twins Acquire RHP Trevor Richards From Blue Jays

Minnesota became the latest team to jump in on the trade deadline fun, finally reportedly swinging a deal with the Blue Jays for RHP Trevor Richards, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Richards, 31, will be a free agent after the season and is currently sporting a 4.64 ERA in 45 appearances for Toronto. Return for the veteran arm is reported to be High-A infielder Jay Harry.

Mariners Acquire RHP JT Chargois From Marlins

The Marlins continue to dispatch pieces from their bullpen, sending RHP JT Chargois to the Mariners, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. They will receive RHP Will Schomberg, per MLB.com’s Christina De Nicola. Schomberg did not rank in the Seattle Top 30. More to come…

Paul DeJong Switches Dugouts In Royals-White Sox Trade

The Royals continued to add around the edges Tuesday, acquiring SS Paul DeJong from the White Sox ahead of the stretch run. The two teams are in the midst of a three-game series in Chicago. DeJong, 30, is hitting .228/.275/.430 in 337 at-bats this year. The White Sox will reportedly receive RHP Jarold Rosado. The Royals signed Rosado in 2020 out of the Dominican Republic. The righthander missed the 2022 season with injury, and has moved a level a year since then. The 22-year-old is a relief-only prospect who works with a mid-90s four-seamer that has peaked at 98 and backs it with a low-80s slider and a high-80s changeup. Both of his offspeed pitches have miss rates north of 50%.

A’s Stay Busy, Send RHP Paul Blackburn To The Mets

The A’s agreed to trade RHP Paul Blackburn to the Mets for RHP Kade Morris, according to The Athletic’s Will Sammon. Morris ranked No. 26 in the Mets farm system. The Mets drafted Morris in the third round last year out of Arizona, where he had spent two seasons in the bullpen before moving to the rotation as a junior. He opened this season at Low-A St. Lucie before moving to High-A Brooklyn at the end of May. He struck out 95 batters against 30 walks in 92.1 innings to go with a 3.51 ERA. Morris pitches at 92-94 mph and tops at 96 with an average four-seam fastball. His greatest asset is his ability to spin a low-80s slider that could be an above-average pitch. He rounds out his arsenal with a curveball and changeup that give him four-pitch, back-of-the-rotation upside.

Royals Continue To Retool Bullpen, Add Erceg For 3 Prospects

The A’s and Royals swung a deal for RHP Lucas Erceg on Tuesday afternoon. The A’s will receive RHP Mason Barnett (No. 11 Royals prospect), RHP Will Klein (No. 16) and OF Jared Dickey in return, per Mark Feinsand. Erceg has electric stuff albeit with shaky control and gives Kansas City yet another late-inning arm as they add to the bullpen.

Andrew Chafin Heads To Rangers

The Rangers acquired Tigers LHP Andrew Chafin, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. In return, they will receive RHPs Joseph Montalvo and Chase Lee, according to Evan Grant. Montalvo was the Rangers’ 20th-round pick in 2021, out of high school in Florida. He’s found success at both levels of Class A ball, but missed nearly the entire month of July with an injury. He’s been helped this season by an uptick in velocity and an improved changeup he can use against hitters of both hands. He had 73 strikeouts in 59 innings at High-A Hickory this season.

Lee was Texas’ sixth-round pick in 2021, out of Alabama. He missed the first half of the season with a torn labrum in his hip and returned to Triple-A Round Rock in late June. The 25-year-old righthander works with two- and four-seam fastballs in the low 90s and a slider in the low 80s. His four-seamer has a miss rate of roughly 47% and he’d struck out 18 hitters in 14 innings at the time of the trade.

Yankees Send LHP Caleb Ferguson To Astros For Minor Leaguer, International Pool Money

Yankee fans refreshing their feeds in hopes of seeing a big splash will have to keep clicking a little longer, as the team’s latest deadline deal will see relief pitcher Caleb Ferguson sent to the Astros for a prospect and cash. Ferguson, a former Dodgers prospect, appeared in 42 games after being traded to New York this past winter, logging a 5.13 ERA with 41 strikeouts against 16 walks. In return, the Yankees will receive RHP Kelly Austin according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome. Austin, who did not rank in Houston’s Top 30, has a 2.21 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 36.2 innings of relief this year between both Class A levels.

Guardians Land Veteran RHP Alex Cobb for Jacob Bresnahan, PTBNL

Alex Cobb is headed from the West Coast to the thick of the AL pennant chase. Per a report from MLB.com’s Mandy Bell, the Giants will ship the veteran righthander to Cleveland in return for pitching prospect Jacob Bresnahan and a player to be named later. Bresnahan did not crack a very deep Guardians’ Top 30, but he is an interesting young lefthander with the potential upside of a backend starter. Bresnahan, 19, sits at 91-93 mph with his fastball to go with an 82-84 mph gyro slider and changeup that’s been effective so far, but mainly against lower-level hitters.

Marlins Ship 1B Josh Bell To Arizona

The Marlins placed 1B Josh Bell on waivers two days ago, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray, and now deal him to Arizona, where he’ll fill in for Christian Walker as Walker deals with an oblique injury. Arizona is reportedly sending cash considerations to Miami in the trade. Bell, 31, has been hot since the all-star break, but is still slashing just .239/.305/.394 along with 14 homers for a 96 wRC+.

Orioles Fortify Rotation By Adding Rogers From Marlins

Baltimore landed 26-year-old lefty Trevor Rogers from Miami Tuesday afternoon in exchange for 2B/SS Connor Norby, the Orioles’ No. 7 prospect, and outfielder Kyle Stowers, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Rogers is under contract for two more seasons, and while he hasn’t quite replicated his breakout 2021 campaign, he provides Baltimore another midrotation option to bolster its march to the postseason. Norby, 24, is an offensive-oriented middle infielder with some versatility who has the ceiling of an everyday second baseman, although his path to consistent at-bats in Baltimore was likely blocked. Stowers, 26, has big power but has also struggled with strikeouts so far in his career.

Red Sox Add RHP Lucas Sims For Teenage Righty Ovis Portes

The Red Sox turned to Cincinnati to help fortify their beleaguered bullpen depth, adding RHP Lucas Sims in exchange for 19-year-old RHP Ovis Portes, according to Joel Sherman. Sims, 30, owns a 3.57 ERA (and 4.79 XFIP) through 35.1 innings to go along with a 26% strikeout rate and 13% walk rate. He provides another late-inning option for Boston to bridge to Kenley Jansen, a role that has been thinned recently by injuries to Justin Slaten and Chris Martin. Portes, meanwhile, ranked No. 29 in Boston’s system and made his full-season debut this season. His stuff has jumped this season and his mid-90s fastball has touched 99 in games, although his secondaries and control need considerably more refinement.

Yankees, Cubs Kick Off Trade Deadline Day

After a quiet morning, the Yankees and Cubs struck the first non-DFA deal of trade deadline day when Chicago shipped reliever Mark Leiter Jr. to New York and received RHP Jack Neely and infielder Ben Cowles. Neely ranked No. 20 on the Yankees’ midseason Top 30 Prospects. The 6-foot-8 righty reached Triple-A for the first time this year and has pitched to a 2.81 ERA and 63 strikeouts over 41.2 innings of relief across two levels this year.

July 29

Braves Acquire Soler, Jackson Ahead Of Stretch Run

In a double #oldfriend alert, the Braves acquired OF Jorge Soler and RHP Luke Jackson from the Giants. Both Soler and Jackson were members of Atlanta’s 2021 World Series roster. In return, San Francisco received LHP Tyler Matzek, another member of that team, and 3B prospect Sabin Ceballos, who ranked No. 26 in Atlanta’s midseason update. An under-slot third-round selection in 2023, Ceballos slashed .259/.353/.354 with three homers in 84 games with High-A Rome. The third baseman has impressive raw power and generates ample bat speed, although it hasn’t translated to in-game power just yet, and has a strong arm at third base albeit with limited range, leading some scouts to wonder if he’s a potential catcher conversion candidate.

Reds Ship Frankie Montas To Division Rival Brewers

The Reds dealt RHP Frankie Montas to the Brewers on Monday night, receiving OF Joey Wiemer and RHP Jakob Junis in return. The rare non-prospect deadline trade, Montas’ arrival in Milwaukee grabs your attention considering the Brewers’ success working with pitchers. The 31-year-old righty, who underwent shoulder surgery last year, still has lively stuff, but is walking more batters compared to earlier in his career as a starter. Wiemer topped out as Milwaukee’s No. 3 prospect in 2023, although he owns a .201/.277/.349 line in 393 career big league at-bats so far. Still, he’s under team control through 2028. Junis is a useful bullpen option, even if estimators suggest his 2.42 ERA is a bit lucky this year, and has an $8 million mutual option for 2025 with a $3 million buyout.

Rockies Send LHP Jalen Beeks To Pittsburgh For LHP Luis Peralta

The Pirates, who began the day 53-52 and two games out of a wild card spot, added to their bullpen Monday night, acquiring Rockies LHP Jalen Beeks in exchange for No. 24 prospect LHP Luis Peralta. The younger brother of Freddy Peralta, Luis pitched his way to the upper minors (and onto Pittsburgh’s Top 30) on the strength of his overpowering plus 94-96 mph fastball. The 23-year-old has 64 strikeouts through 39.2 innings. He has the ceiling of a high-leverage lefty bullpen arm if he can harness both an effective breaking ball and his overall strike-throwing. Beeks saved nine games for the Rockies and provides Pittsburgh another experience late-inning lefty alongside Aroldis Chapman.

Dodgers Acquire Rosario Once Again From Rays For RHP Michael Flynn

The Dodgers acquired utilityman Amed Rosario for the second time in as many deadlines, this time sending RHP Michael Flynn to the Rays in exchange. Flynn was taken in the sixth round of the 2018 draft by the Pirates. He was released in 2021, then signed by the Mariners in May 2022. He was signed by the Dodgers as a minor league free agent in December 2023 and has spent this season between Double-A and Triple-A, where he’s struck out 59 hitters in 42.1 innings. He works with four- and two-seam fastballs as well as a cutter and slider. He tops out around 95 mph, with the cutter coming in a couple of ticks slower. Flynn throws his mid-80s slider more than any of his fastball varieties, which is understandable considering it gets whiffs and chases at rates better than 30%.

Astros Get Rotation Help, Deal Jake Bloss & More for LHP Yusei Kikuchi

According to multiple reports, the Astros struck a deal Monday to acquire lefthanded pitcher Yusei Kikuchi from the Blue Jays for a return package that includes recently-promoted pitching prospect Jake Bloss. While Kikuchi is a rental, he has been a productive starter over each of the last two seasons, posting 15 wins and 311 strikeouts against 78 walks. Bloss, who came in at No. 2 in BA’s most recent Top 30 prospect ranking earlier this month, pitched his way to the major leagues this season after being selected in the third round of the 2023 draft out of Georgetown.

Guardians Send Trio Of Prospects To Washington For OF Lane Thomas

The Guardians dealt a trio of prospects for OF Lane Thomas on Monday evening that included No. 7 prospect LHP Alexander Clemmey, No. 20 SS Rafael Ramirez and No. 28 SS Jose Tena. Clemmey, the team’s second-round selection out of high school in 2023, has high upside but considerable strike-throwing question marks. For Cleveland, Thomas entered the day slashing .253/.331/.407 with eight homers and is under contract through 2025. You can see scouting reports on every prospect here.

Mariners Add Justin Turner From Blue Jays For OF RJ Schreck

Nearing 40 years of age, Justin Turner continues to prove himself a valuable asset. On Monday, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the Mariners will be the latest team (Turner’s sixth) to try to capitalize on that value by agreeing to a trade with the Blue Jays for the the 16-year veteran. Though his power numbers are down (six homers in 89 games), Turner still brings his usual selective patience at the plate, slashing .253/.348/.370 this season with a .793 OPS against lefthanders. He is limited defensively and primarily a DH these days but can still fill in at a few spots in the infield (mainly first base).

According to multiple reports, the return for Toronto will be OF RJ Schreck. Drafted in the ninth round out of Vanderbilt last year and signed for $75,000, the 24-year-old has been a feel-good story for the Mariners, as he’s hit his way to Double-A is his first full season. He hit .261/.401/.464 over 78 games with High-A Everett while walking more than he struck out. Schreck’s barrel rate of 17% is a hint at his ability to make square contact consistently and could be among the top reasons the Blue Jays valued him.

Dodgers, Cardinals & White Sox Swing Massive Three-Team Deal

The Dodgers, Cardinals and White Sox synced on an extensive trade Monday afternoon, where the Dodgers received Tommy Edman and Michael Kopech, the Cardinals landed Erick Fedde plus Tommy Pham and the White Sox got a package of Dodgers players/prospects in the deal: Miguel Vargas, Alexander Albertus and Jeral Perez. Both Albertus and Perez ranked squarely in the middle of the Dodgers’ midseason Top 30 update, which you can see here.

Red Sox Land RHP Quinn Priester From Pirates For Infield Prospect Nick Yorke

The Red Sox, who continue to add in advance of Tuesday’s trade deadline, agreed Monday to send infield prospect Nick Yorke to the Pirates in exchange for RHP Quinn Priester, according to a report by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Priester, a 23-year-old first-round draft pick of the Pirates back in 2019, made his major league debut for Pittsburgh last season. Ranked the Pirates’ No. 5 prospect in 2023, he was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis at the start of the 2024 season before being called up and posting a 5.04 ERA and 1.46 WHIP across eight appearances (six starts) for the big league club.

Baseball America graded Yorke as Boston’s No. 14 prospect for 2024. The 22-year-old was selected in surprising fashion with the 17th overall pick in 2020. After impressing in A-ball, Yorke’s development stalled due to injuries and issues with hitting mechanics. In 83 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, he is slashing .278/.363./.422 with 10 home runs and 42 walks against 68 strikeouts.

Dodgers Send RHP Ricky Vanasco To Tigers For Cash Considerations

Ricky Vanasco is on the move after the Dodgers traded him to the Tigers for cash considerations, the team announced Monday. Vanasco, who turns 26 in October, was a 15th round draft pick of the Rangers back in 2017 and ranked in the Top 30 prospects of the Texas system for several years, topping out at No. 13 in 2022. The righthanded reliever has appeared in just two major league games for the Dodgers this season.

Royals Add RHP Michael Lorenzen, Rangers Get Interesting RP Candidate

The Royals acquired veteran righthander Michael Lorenzen from the Rangers on Monday in exchange for lefthanded reliever Walter Pennington. Lorenzen has been a durable and reliable starter, as usual. He was 5-6, 3.81 for the Rangers this year with 19 appearances (18 starts), but his 5.16 FIP is much higher than his ERA. It’s the second consecutive year he’s been traded at the deadline. He’s a free agent at the end of the year, as he’s playing on a one-year, $4.5 million contract.

Pennington made his MLB debut earlier this year. He’s a pretty fascinating relief candidate who put himself on the radar by dominating in spring training appearances, and his results have carried over to Triple-A. Pennington doesn’t overwhelm with velocity, but his low-80s slider is a devastating pitch against lefties and is nearly as effective against righthanders. He has struck out 32.9% of batters this year, and both lefties (.546 OPS) and righties (.540 OPS) are producing equally microscopic numbers against him. Pennington barely throws his low-90s fastball; if his slider and high-80s cutter are working, he sees no need to make life easier for hitters.

July 28

Tigers Trade C Carson Kelly To Rangers, Make Room To Call Up Dillon Dingler

The Tigers made what might be described as an expected traded on Sunday night when they pulled the trigger on a deal to ship backup backstop Carson Kelly to the Rangers, per a report from The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. In return, the Tigers will receive C Liam Hicks and RHP Tyler Owens.

In 59 games, Kelly is hitting .242 with seven home runs and a .716 OPS. More interesting, perhaps, is roster space created for Detroit to call up minor league catcher Dillon Dingler, who ranked as the team’s No. 10 prospect and was labeled a “notable riser” in BA’s recent midseason prospect update. In 71 Triple-A games this season, the 25-year-old is hitting .308 with 17 home runs.

Hicks ranked as the Rangers No. 30 prospect before the most recent update added draftees. He’s a ninth-round senior sign out of the 2021 draft who has hit for average and gotten on base most everywhere he’s played. He has very little power and his defense is fringy enough to make it hard for him to fill a back-up catcher role in the majors. He projects for now as a No. 3 catcher to park in Triple-A for fill-in duty.

Owens was drafted in the 13th round by the Braves in 2019. He was acquired by the Rangers in last offseason’s trade for J.P. Martinez. Owens has been left unprotected and unpicked in the past two Rule 5 drafts. The 5-foot-10 righthander has been a reliever for the vast majority of his pro career. He mixes a 95-97 mph fastball and a hard high-80s slider. He projects as an up-and-down reliever.

Cubs Land Isaac Paredes From Rays For Christopher Morel, Two Pitching Prospects

The Rays continued their roster renovation Sunday by sending third baseman Isaac Paredes to the Cubs for third baseman Christopher Morel, reliever Hunter Bigge and sleeper pitching prospect Ty Johnson.

The move gives Chicago an upgrade at the hot corner in Paredes, who is not a free agent until 2028, while the Rays add a similarly cost-controlled replacement, as well as a pair of prospects. Tampa Bay, in the unfamiliar position compared to recent years as a seller, has now dealt righthander Zach Elfin (Orioles), outfielder Randy Arozarena (Mariners) and reliever Jason Adam (Padres) at the deadline.

Dylan Lesko Headlines Prospect Haul In Rays-Padres Jason Adam Trade

Sunday’s trade deadline dealings started with a bang, as the the Padres acquired Rays bullpen ace Jason Adam for a package of three Top 30 Prospects. The sizable return for Adam includes the Padres’ 2022 first round draft pick and No. 5 prospect Dylan Lesko, No. 8 prospect J.D. Gonzalez and No.12 prospect Homer Bush.

Lesko’s inclusion is particularly notable given his prospect pedigree. The Padres drafted him No. 15 overall two years ago and signed him to a $3.9 million bonus. He entered the season ranked as the No. 38 prospect in baseball, but fell out of the list as he continues to fight his command and control.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, was on our radar prior to the season as a prospect of note, although he’s scuffled a bit in Low-A this year.

Mets Acquire OF Jesse Winker From Nats for RHP Tyler Stuart

Late on a busy pre-deadline Saturday night, the Mets struck a deal to acquire OF Jesse Winker for RHP Tyler Stuart. The resurgent outfielder signed a minor league deal with the Nationals and has responded with his best season since he was in Cincinnati in 2021. Winker is hitting .253/.372/.417 over 100 games.

Stuart has emerged as a legitimate back of the rotation option as a pro and is currently ranked as the Mets’ No. 23 prospect on the recently updated Mets Top 30 Prospects list. Over 17 starts with Double-A Binghamton, he is 3-7, 3.96 ERA with a 25.4% strikeout percentage and a 5.6% walk percentage.

Angels Deal Carlos Estévez To Phillies For 2 Rising Pitching Prospects

Bereft of farm system talent, the Angels traded one of their best remaining big league assets to help restock on Saturday, as they agreed to trade closer Carlos Estévez to the Phillies in exchange for pitchers George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Klassen (No. 5 overall prospect) and Aldegheri (No. 7) were among Philadelphia’s top pitching prospects. Both boosted their stock significantly early in the season, as Baseball America’s Geoff Pontes outlined in May. Baseball America subscribers can see full scouting reports for both players here.

Estévez, 31, saved 20 games for the Angels this season and is in the midst of another strong year in high-leverage situations, pitching to a 2.38 ERA and a miniscule 4% walk rate in 34 innings so far.

Red Sox Add Danny Jansen For Three Prospects In Trade with Blue Jays

The Red Sox took another step in quieting the will-they-or-won’t-they deadline discourse on Saturday when they swung a trade with the division rival Blue Jays for C Danny Jansen. Jansen hasn’t put up stellar offensive numbers in 2024, but is coming off a year in which he set career-best marks in homes (17), RBIs (53) and doubles (15) and should give Boston another valuable veteran presence behind the plate.

Return on the deal for Toronto included a trio of minor leaguers: 3B/SS Cutter Coffey, SS Eddinson Paulino and RHP Gilberto Bautista. Boston also designated RHP Alex Speas for assignment to make room for Jansen on its 40-man roster. Paulino, a 22-year-old native of the Dominican Republic who signed with the Red Sox in 2018, has ranked in the organization’s Top 30 for several years now, coming in at No. 18 in this year’s midseason update.

Paulino is slashing .263/.349/.740 with three home runs and 10 stolen bases in Double-A at the time of the trade, while Coffey, who boasts 60-grade power, has 14 homers in 61 games at High-A. Bautista, 19, has a 3.67 ERA in 14 career starts between the Dominican Summer League and Florida Complex League.

Yankees Acquire Jazz Chisholm From Marlins For 3 Prospects

The Yankees are finalizing a trade to acquire Marlins star Jazz Chisholm, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. They will reportedly send three minor leaguers back to Miami in the deal, including C Agustin Ramirez. You can see the Yankees’ Top 30 Prospects here.

Rockies Land 2 Brewers Pitching Prospects For RHP Nick Mears

The Brewers added to their bullpen depth Saturday afternoon by acquiring RHP Nick Mears in exchange for RHP Yujanyer Herrera and RHP Bradley Blalock. The 27-year-old Mears has a bloated 5.56 ERA but some intriguing characteristics, including a fastball that averages nearly 97 mph, and now heads to a Brewers pitching development program with no shortage of recent success stories.

Herrera ranked No. 28 in our Brewers’ midseason Top 30 update. The 20-year-old reached High-A for the first time this year, where he’s 6-1 with a 3.18 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 51 innings. He has shown increased velocity this year, sitting 92-95 and scraping 98 mph. He also throws a separate two-seam fastball that’s a beat slower. Herrera’s best secondary is his above-average mid-80s slider, and he relies primarily on his fastball-slider combination, sprinkling in a curveball and a changeup as well. There’s potential his fastball-slider mix could perform even better in a relief role.

Blalock, 23, made his big league debut this year, pitching one inning of relief for the Brewers. The Brewers acquired Blalock from the Red Sox at last year’s trade deadline. He has otherwise spent all of 2024 with Double-A Biloxi, posting a 4.08 ERA in 75 innings while striking out 64 compared to 27 walks. He did not rank in Milwaukee’s midseason Top 30, but Blalock has an interesting 93 mph fastball that touches 97 with nearly 20 inches of IVB.

Blue Jays Send Former Top Prospect Nate Pearson To Cubs For Two Minor Leaguers

At the same time as they announced that top pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann would have Tommy John surgery, the Blue Jays swung a deal that would send one of their former top pitching prospects—RHP Nate Pearson—to the Cubs for minor leaguers Yohendrick Pinango and Josh Rivera. Pearson has some less-than-flattering counting numbers out of the Toronto bullpen this season (5.63 ERA, 1.55 WHIP), but the 27-year-old reliever still boasts one of MLB’s higher-velo fastballs with very good extension while sporting a 28% strikeout rate.

For the scuffling former first round draft pickPearson was once the Blue Jays’ top-ranked prospect and cracked the BA top 10 overall back in 2020a change of scenery could be just what the doctor ordered to help jumpstart his career.

Mariners Deal RHP Ryne Stanek To Mets

Just as one reliever enters, another departs from the Mariners bullpen. Seattle traded 33-year-old RHP Ryne Stanek to the Mets in exchange for 24-year-old outfielder Rhylan Thomas, according to SNY’s Andy Martino. Stanek carries a 4.38 ERA through 46 outings. He throws hard, averaging 98 mph, and elicits plenty of swings and misses, but has also at times struggled with consistency and control this year. In return, the Mariners receive Thomas, who has hit .265/.318/.387 with five homers in 74 games in the upper minors.

Thomas can play all three outfield positions and has solid bat-to-ball skills albeit with limited power and he chases out of the zone about a third of the time. He helps replenish Seattle’s upper-level outfielder depth after it dealt Jonatan Clase to the Blue Jays for RHP Yimi Garcia.

Mariners Add Reliever Yimi Garcia From Blue Jays for Jonatan Clase, Jacob Sharp

After acquiring Randy Arozarena from the Tampa Bay Rays in the wee hours of the morning, the Mariners made another swing through the American League East to bolster their bullpen on Friday. According to a report by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Seattle has agreed to a trade for Blue Jays reliever Yimi Garcia. The return for Toronto, which had been seen by many as a team primed to sell off at the deadline, will be a pair of minor leaguers in outfielder Jonatan Clase and catcher Jacob Sharpper The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Orioles Acquire Pitcher Zach Eflin From Rays For A Trio Minor Leaguers

Sitting atop the American League East standings with their attention geared toward a deep postseason run, the Orioles made in-division a deal to bolster their starting rotation on Friday. According to report by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Baltimore has agreed to acquire righthanded pitcher Zach Eflin from the Rays. Per Jeff Passan of ESPN, the Orioles will send a trio of minor leaguers back to Tampa Bay: outfielder Matthew Etzel, righthanded pitcher Jackson Baumeister and infielder Mac Horvath.

Orioles, Phillies swap majors leaguers

The Orioles and Phillies synced for a rare deadline swap of majors leaguers between two World Series hopefuls. The Phillies acquired OF Austin Hays in exchange for RHP Seranthony Dominguez and OF Cristian Pache. The 28-year-old Hays is slashing .255/.316/.395 through 63 games with just three homers, while Dominguez owns a somewhat unlucky 4.75 ERA through 36 innings of relief along with a 25.5% strikeout rate. Hays provides the Phillies with a righthanded bat with a track record of success against lefties to fortify their lineup, and it now opens up more playing time in Baltimore for Heston Kjerstad and Colton Cowser if both remain on the roster through the deadline.

Dodgers send DFA’d James Paxton to Red Sox in exchange for DSL prospect

The Red Sox acquired old friend LHP James Paxton from the Dodgers on Friday. Los Angeles had designated Paxton for assignment earlier this week. The 35-year-old lefthander, who spent all of 2023 with Boston, went 8-2, 4.43 in 89.1 innings (18 starts) with the Dodgers this season, although his 6.4 K/9 is the lowest of his career.

In exchange, the Dodgers acquired 3B/1B Moises Bolivar, who signed with the Red Sox as an international free agent this past winter. Boliver hit .270/.364/.423 with three homers through 31 games in the Dominican Summer League while primarily playing third base and showing solid approach/strike-zone management.

Randy Arozarena Traded To Mariners For Aidan Smith, Brody Hopkins & Player To Be Named

While most of the country was asleep in the early hours of a Friday morning, the Mariners were busying adding some much-needed offensive support for their pitching staff. In exchange for a pair of minor leaguers in outfielder Aidan Smith and righthander Brody Hopkins, as well as a player to be named later, Seattle pried Randy Arozarena—one of October’s most potent sluggers—away from the Rays.

The trade waters are finally heating up. The Marlins and D-backs swung a deal late Thursday night, as Miami sent lefty A.J. Puk to Arizona in exchange for 1B Deyvison De Los Santos and outfielder Andrew Pintar, who were both tabbed as midseason risers in our last Arizona Top 30 Prospects update.

July 13

Royals acquire RHP Hunter Harvey from Nationals for 3B Cayden Wallace and a 2025 draft pick

Sitting just one game back of a wild card spot, the Royals swung a deal to bolster their bullpen. In exchange for righty Hunter Harvey, Kansas City sent third baseman Cayden Wallace and the 39th overall pick in this year’s draft to the Nationals.

July 3

Brewers acquire RHP Aaron Civale from Rays for SS Gregory Barrios

The Rays and Brewers struck the first significant deal of the summer when Milwaukee acquired righthander Aaron Civale from Tampa Bay for High-A shortstop Gregory Barrios. Civale, who was acquired from Cleveland last summer in exchange for first baseman Kyle Manzardo, will help salve a Brewers pitching staff that has been wracked by injuries all year long.
