2022 NCAA Baseball Tournament Projected Field Of 64
Selection Monday is upon us. At noon, teams around the country will learn their postseason fate – if they got in, where they’re going to regionals and their path to Omaha. This is Baseball America’s final projection of the Field of 64.
The last two days have seen bubbles pop all over the country. Upsets in several conference tournaments caused the bubble to tighten considerably, to the point where any of the last eight teams left out of the field could reasonably feel like they have a tournament resume in a more normal year. But after a surprising week of conference tournaments, teams like Liberty (37-21, RPI 31) and Wofford (42-16-1, RPI 35) are in for an anxious Monday despite winning regular-season titles and major conference teams like West Virginia (32-22, RPI 50) and Kentucky (33-26, RPI 52) may be ruing missed opportunities.
The selection committee has already announced the 16 host sites, so those teams are locked into the projections. The order of those top 16 seeds has yet to be revealed, however. There were a couple surprises on the host line, as Notre Dame (35-14, RPI 14) and Oklahoma (37-20, RPI 19) were snubbed. The omission of the Sooners was particularly glaring, as they won the Big 12 Tournament and have more wins against top-50 RPI teams than all but Tennessee and North Carolina.
Speaking of the Tar Heels, their seeding is one to watch. They went just 15-15 in regular-season ACC play but won the conference tournament and rank third in RPI. How high will the committee run them up the seed list? Omitting Oklahoma from the hosts indicates that maybe UNC’s ACC Tournament title won’t be a big difference maker in their resume, but it still has a lot of things going for its top-eight seed case.
The selection show will air on ESPN2 at noon.
