2021 Cincinnati Reds Instructional League Roster
Run, don’t walk, to Goodyear, Ariz., to get a look at one of the hottest prospects in the game. He’s lanky, lightning-quick and gifted with light-tower power and already in the conversation for a spot on the Top 100 Prospects list. Of course, we’re talking about Elly De La Cruz, who went from anonymous to unstoppable in about the same amount of time it took for one of his home runs to clear the fence. His at-bats should be required viewing for those prowling the backfields in the desert heat.
The Reds’ roster isn’t a one-man show, however. Far from it. You want power? Check out catcher Mat Nelson, who led the NCAA in longballs in 2021, and third baseman Rece Hinds, possessor of some of the sport’s most prodigious pop. Shortstop Jose Torres hasn’t been in the system long, but the North Carolina State product already drew some nice compliments from those who saw him in the Low-A East.
And if it’s velocity you’re after, check out righthander Joe Boyle. The Notre Dame product might not dot the corners with regularity, but he’ll give the ol’ Stalker Pro a workout.
