2021 Chicago Cubs Instructional League Roster
If you like tooled-up prospects, the Cubs instructional league roster is for you. Their group is led by a glut of high-end shortstops, starting with Reginald Preciado, whom the team acquired from the Padres in the Yu Darvish deal. Preciado was exceptional in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League, where he slashed .333/.383/.511 with 16 extra-base hits and seven stolen bases.
The shortstop group also includes slick-fielding 2020 first-rounder Ed Howard, impressive 2021 second-rounder James Triantos and high-profile 2019 International signee Kevin Made. Howard and Made each spent time at Low-A Myrtle Beach this year, and Triantos was eye-opening in the ACL. Triantos ranked sixth on the ACL’s Top 10 list.
The crown jewel of the infield group, however, might be Cristian Hernandez, the 17-year-old phenom whose outstanding tool set has already landed him on BA’s Top 100 Prospect list. He’s got the potential five average or better tools, including potential plusses for his power, speed and throwing arm.
High-upside outfielders Owen Caissie and Kevin Alcantara, landed in trades from the Padres and Yankees, respectively, are also among the Cubs’ instructional league crew. Caissie and Alcantara ranked No. 3 and No. 4 on the ACL Top 10.
