The Cedar Rapids Kernels had two of the best young prospects in baseball for the first half of the 2018 season, but by the time the Midwest League season ended, it was the Bowling Green Hot Rods who made their mark as the team to remember.
The Hot Rods won a minor league best 90 games and cruised to the Midwest League title, winning seven of his eight postseason games. And they did it with an impressive group of prospects. Catcher Ronaldo Hernandez, lefthander/first baseman Brendan McKay, second baseman Vidal Brujan and outfielder Moises Gomez all made the Top 20 Prospects list, while shortstop Taylor Walls didn’t miss by much.
As has been the case frequently in recent years, the Midwest League was much more prospect-laden than the South Atlantic League. Five of the top six picks in the 2017 draft spent time in the Midwest League in 2018.
