2017 State Draft Report: New Jersey
CROP RATING | |
Not up to par | |
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states |
The Garden State isn’t an obvious baseball hotbed, but it’s produced a steady diet of big leaguers for quite a while. Mike Trout is already by far the best player to come out of the state, and while there is no second coming of Trout on the horizon, his alma mater does have a prospect this year in third baseman Buddy Kennedy. The state is deep with bat-first prospects playing third base—Kennedy, Nick Egnatuk and Davis Schneider fit that description.
Andrew Papantonis appeared poised to claim the title as the state’s top prospect before an ACL injury in the fall limited him in the spring. He and Devin Ortiz are both headed to Virginia, where they could both blossom into early-round talents.
