2017 State Draft Report: Mississippi
CROP RATING | |
Solid, not spectacular | |
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states |
The Brent Rooker show was sensational this year and rightfully, he should be the first player off the board from Mississippi. It’s a very hitter-heavy year in Mississippi, as only one pitcher is among our top 14 draftable players from the state.

Zack Shannon, 1B, Delta State (Miss.) College
Before an injury ruined his senior season in high school, Shannon was considered one of the top prep arms in Ohio in 2014. Post-injury, he’s become a slugger. Shannon was one of the best players in Division II this year, hitting .434/.498/.734 with 19 home runs.
Simon Landry, 1B, Pearl River (Miss.) JC
A big (6-foot-4) first baseman with plus power, Landry hit 14 of Pearl River’s 34 home runs this year. He likely will need another year or two to prove he has toned down his contact issues enough to get to his power potential.
