2017 MLB Draft Division Breakdown: NL East

BRAVES

The Braves have one of the deepest farm systems in the game, which may play a role in why the team went quality over quantity with its draft. RHP Kyle Wright (5), OF Drew Waters (2) and RHP Freddy Tarnok (3) are all high-ceiling and pricey picks. After that Atlanta took productive but inexpensive senior signs from the fifth through 10th rounds.

MARLINS

The Marlins haven’t had much luck with their recent first-round high school arms as Tyler Kolek is recovering from Tommy John surgery and Braxton Garrett is facing potential surgery himself, but LHP Trevor Rogers (1) gives Miami another chance at the high-ceiling high school arm. He was their only prep pick. OF Brian Miller (1s), 3B Joe Dunand (2) and 2B Riley Mahan (3) give the Marlins a trio of athletic college hitters.

METS

The Mets have had one of the hardest-throwing rotations in baseball in recent years, but also one of the most injury prone. Oregon LHP David Peterson (1) fits more as a back-end starter who should move quickly. 3B Mark Vientos (2) could grow into a physical monster at the hot corner. RHP Tony Dibrell (4) is an upside play, as he’s more raw than he average college weekend starter.

PHILLIES

Adam Haseley (1) is an athletic center fielder whose hit tool is better than his power, a similar profile to 2016 No. 1 overall pick Mickey Moniak. RHP Connor Seabold (3) is a quick-moving control artist, but the team’s most fascinating pick is LHP Jhordany Mezquita (8), a pitcher the team had tried to sign out of the Dominican Republic who few other teams even had on their draft radars.

NATIONALS

With the big league team in perennial playoff contention but also sporting a bullpen in need of help, the Nationals top three picks are all hard-throwing pitchers who could move quickly, but all three have question marks. LHP Seth Romero (1) has been kicked off his college team for disciplinary issues. RHP Will Crowe (2) had Tommy John surgery and LHP Nick Raquet (3) has control problems. But all three have swing-and-miss stuff. RHPs Kyle Johnston (6), Jackson Tetreault (7) and Jared Brasher (8) also have plus stuff and control problems.
