Manager: Spike Owen (Rangers) Pitching Coaches: Mitch Stetter (Royals), Steve Watson (Rays) Hitting Coach: Jobel Jimenez (Cardinals) |
THE STARS: There are still five roster spots to fill, but currently the star power of the Saguaros is rather dim. There are no Top 100 Prospects on this roster. There are plenty of pitchers with impressive fastballs on the roster, led by Cardinals RHPs Sandy Alcantara and Jordan Hicks….RHP Benton Moss (Rays) is a fast-moving college draft pick who had a solid season in Double-A….The Surprise middle infield is the team’s biggest strength thanks to Nicky Lopez (Royals), Brandon Lowe (Rays) and Edmundo Sosa (Cardinals)….The AFL will give OF Oscar Mercado (Cardinals) a further chance to break through a significant logjam of outfielders in the upper levels of St. Louis’ organization.
INTERESTING: C Andrew Knizner (Cardinals) was a seventh-round pick in 2016, but he’s moved extremely quickly. He’s coming off a solid season at the plate with Double-A Springfield. While he’s clearly behind Carson Kelly among the Cardinals’ young catchers, he’s putting himself on the prospect map….C Josh Morgan (Rangers) is the rare catcher/shortstop. He’s on the taxi squad as he continues to work on developing his catching skills….2B/3B Luis La O (Rangers) tried to shake off rust at high Class A Down East this season, but the 25-year-old former Serie Nacional star needs to speed up his development in the AFL.
REHABBING: LHP Tyler Jay (Twins) has just returned to action after missing most of the season with a shoulder injury. He will get needed innings in Surprise….RHP Burch Smith (Rays) missed two full seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery and didn’t get back on the mound in games until late June.
