THE STARS: Salt River is light on “stars,” per se, but the Brewers sent two of their Top 10 Prospects at midseason in 3B Lucas Erceg and OF Corey Ray. Erceg struggled to start the season in high Class A but has come on in August and is showing signs of controlling the strike zone. He has the defense and power profile to stay at third base. Ray has had swing-and-miss issues at high Class A, but has stolen 24 of 34 bases and still shows the raw talent that made him the fifth overall pick just a year ago . . . SS Ryan Mountcastle (Orioles) has struggled at Double-A at 20 years old after slashing .314/.343/.542 at high Class A. Mountcastle will almost certainly move off shortstop and might end up seeing some time in the outfield in the AFL.
INTERESTING: 1B Jake Gatewood (Brewers) got contact lenses, moved to first base and saw a huge uptick in production. He still strikes out too much—29 percent—but his 40 doubles are tied for second in the minors… RHP Ben Meyer (Marlins) has seen his velocity tick up to 90-93 mph with a slider that can be a swing-and-miss pitch…RHP Yoan Lopez (Diamondbacks) was a disappointment as a starter but has been excellent out of the bullpen at high Class A Visalia, striking out 48 of 100 batters he has faced . . . LHP Keegan Akin (Orioles) is striking out nearly 10 batters per nine innings at high Class A after tweaking his delivery…OF Braxton Lee (Marlins), acquired from the Rays for Adeiny Hechavarria, is a plus-plus defender in center field and could be a solid fourth outfielder….OF Yonathan Daza (Rockies) has minimal power and doesn’t walk much but peppers the ball from gap to gap and is an above-average center fielder . . . LHP Tanner Scott (Orioles) can touch 100 mph, but is most likely a reliever.
REHABBING: LHP Dillon Peters (Marlins) is just 5-foot-9, but has moxie and a fastball that sits 92-94 mph. He missed two months because of a fractured left thumb sustained on a comebacker.
