10 Philadelphia Phillies Prospects To Know Beyond The Top 30 in 2024
Baseball America’s Top 30 Philadelphia Phillies Prospects entering 2024 are here exclusively for subscribers. The list includes updated scouting reports, BA grades and tool grade projections for every player.
Inevitably, there are players every year who barely miss the cut when we narrow down the list. These players are all worth monitoring for various reasons and it’s likely some will either reach the big leagues in 2024 or enjoy breakout seasons lower in the minors.
Here are next 10 players to know in the Phillies system beyond their Top 30.
31. Cam Brown, RHP
The Phillies took a chance on Brown in the 10th round of the 2023 draft based on their history with him in years preceding his draft eligibility. The Texas Christian alum was a highly touted prospect as a prep but went undrafted in 2020 and spent three years with the Horned Frogs showcasing intriguing stuff—mostly a fastball-slider combo—but subpar control and command.
32. Enrique Segura, RHP
Segura was the best pitching prospect on the Phillies’ FCL team and caught the eyes of scouts despite numbers that do not jump off the page. He has a plus fastball and a potentially above-average slider at the front of a three-pitch mix. He’s quick-armed and projectable with a competitive makeup. Now, he needs to throw more strikes.
33. Michael Mercado, RHP
Acquired from Tampa Bay in an offseason trade, Mercado has electric stuff but struggles to throw it for strikes. His arsenal is based on power, operating largely with a combination of a four-seamer and a cutter, which he threw a combined 78% of the time. His main offspeed is a low-80s curveball that racked up whiffs at a 61% clip.
34. Rafael Marchan, C
Marchan spent parts of 2020 and 2021 in the big leagues but hasn’t been back in the last two seasons and missed part of 2022 and 2023 with a left hamstring strain and a broken hamate bone. At the very least, he can be a serviceable backup who can handle a staff.
35. McKinley Moore, RHP
The former White Sox prospect was dealt to Philadelphia for outfielder Adam Haseley. The massive righthander made his big league debut in 2023 and got into three games. He works with a mid-90s fastball and a high-80s slider and fits as a low-leverage bullpen piece.
36. Avery Owusu, OF
Owusu was an under-the-radar selection by the Phillies out of Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the ninth round of the 2023 draft. The hulking outfielder has plenty of tools—including potentially plus speed and arm strength—but will require plenty of polish to get to his ceiling.
37. Ethan Wilson, OF
The South Alabama alum and 2021 second-rounder has tools but needs to rein in his approach to get to them more often. In a season spent entirely at Double-A, Wilson swatted 17 home runs and showed the ability to be an average outfield defender but chased too many pitches.
38. Micah Ottenbreit, RHP
Ottenbreit ranked No. 19 on this list heading into the 2023 season, when he spent most of the season recovering from the Tommy John surgery he’d had at the end of the 2022 season. He had a setback while rehabbing and got into just two games. At his best, he shows a solid three-pitch with feel to spin the ball.
39. Alexis De La Cruz, RHP
De La Cruz signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2023 and made his pro debut in the Dominican Summer League, where he showed a powerful pitch mix led by a low-to-mid-90s fastball and sharp slider. His combination of present stuff and pitchability makes for a high-upside prospect.
40. Jean Cabrera, RHP
Cabrera is a smaller righthander who leans heavily on an excellent slider, which he throws more often than either his four- or two-seam fastball. The Phillies were pleased with Cabrera’s progress after he repeated Low-A Clearwater. He threw more strikes with his mix in 2023 and will be challenged to do the same when he advances to High-A in 2024.
