Drafted in the 7th round (221st overall) by the Boston Red Sox in 2017 (signed for $250,000).

Esplin has an average arm and fringe-average speed, meaning that his most likely defensive home will be a corner outfield spot. To profile in left, he's going to have to mash. And so far, he has. Esplin is a lefthanded hitter with a compact stroke and a knack for hitting line drives. His strong, wide-hipped build and quick hands promise future power. Esplin, a Charlotte commit, opened eyes in March at the IMG Classic, when he hit a single and a double off pitching prospect Nick Storz in front of a large crowd of scouts. The development of his over-the-fence power will dictate his ceiling at the professional level. Esplin is also a legitimate pitching prospect for the collegiate level. He throws from an over-the-top arm slot and pitches at 88-91 in short bursts. He is committed to UNC-Charlotte.

TRACK RECORD: Esplin grew up in the midwest but went to IMG Academy (Fla.) to further his baseball development as a high school senior. At JetBlue Park, the lefthanded hitter commanded notice by clearing the 40-foot wall in left, part of an intriguing show of both power and balance.
SCOUTING REPORT: While Esplin's performances to date have been relatively modest, he signed as a 17-year-old and just completed his first year of full-season ball at age 19. His youth, impressive size, and increasing strength have convinced the Sox that there's considerable untapped potential in his game. Esplin had significantly better numbers against righties than lefties. Esplin's exit velocity has increased each season, topping out at 88.5 in 2019. While Esplin's launch angle has gotten better each year, he still hits more balls on the ground than in the air. Esplin has enough arm to stay in right field.
THE FUTURE: Team officials considered Esplin's 2019 season a huge developmental success and believe he has enough run production potential with the ability to offer average outfield defense, a formula that gives him a solid chance at a platoon future.
The Red Sox found Esplin at the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and liked his line-drive stroke and present strength and power. That was enough to take him in the seventh round. Though Esplin features unusual size for a high schooler, the Sox were taken with the fact that despite standing at 6-foot-4, Esplin demonstrated balance at the plate, athleticism, excellent makeup, and an understanding of how to drive the ball in the air to all fields. In a pre-draft workout, Esplin showed the ability to clear the 40-foot left-field wall at the Red Sox's spring training facility, an almost unheard-of feat for a big league left-handed hitter, let alone a high schooler. Esplin didn't turn 18 until just after he'd started pro ball, suggesting plenty of time and room for development to build upon a promising debut in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. His hitting ability and projectable power give him a chance to rise rapidly in these rankings. Esplin split his time between right and left field as a pro and projects as an average defender with an average arm. He's an average runner as well. His next stop should be low Class A Greenville.
