Arizona found Oliva at a tryout camp, playing on one of the back fields of their Hi Corbett Field complex. He'd been buried on his high school roster, but never gave up on himself. Andy Lopez's coaching staff encouraged him to walk on, and Oliva redshirted as a freshman before blossoming late in Arizona's 2016 run to the College World Series. He took a leap in 2017, ranking second to teammate J.J. Matijevic among Pac-12 players with 24 doubles as he peppered Hi Corbett's spacious gaps with above-average raw power. He's physical at 6-foot-2, 194 pounds and he is an above-average runner as well. His inexperience shows in his jumps both defensively and on the basepaths, his fairly raw defensive skills in center field and his feel for hitting. He has some swing-and-miss to his game and needs polish to profile as a potential power-speed center fielder.

TRACK RECORD: Oliva has exceeded expectations at every stop since he walked on at Arizona and quickly became a starter. The Pirates made him a seventh-round pick in 2017 and he moved quickly through the system. Oliva made his major league debut in 2020, appearing in six games.
SCOUTING REPORT: Oliva is a streaky hitter, but he makes enough contact to hit for average. He mostly deploys a line-drive approach and has just fringe-average power potential. Oliva's greatest strength is his plus-plus speed, which makes him both a basestealing threat and an above-average defender in center field with plenty of range. He has average arm strength and can play the corners as needed.
THE FUTURE: Oliva is ready now to be a reserve outfielder in the majors with his speed and defensive acumen. He'll need to continue making gains with the bat to become more. -
TRACK RECORD: A walk-on turned starter at Arizona, Oliva became the Pirates' seventh-round pick in 2017 following a junior year that saw his offense rapidly improve. He has continued that upward trajectory in pro ball. After emerging as a prospect to watch in his first full season, Oliva moved to Double-A Altoona in 2019 and finished fourth in the Eastern League in hits (124) and second in stolen bases (36).
SCOUTING REPORT: Oliva does all the little things well to be a successful hitter. He commands the strike zone, controls the barrel, shortens his swing and puts the ball in play to take advantage of his plus speed. He takes efficient routes in center field with that plus speed and should have no problem sticking there, although his above-average arm will allow him to move around the outfield as needed. Oliva is a contact hitter with below-average game power, but he knows who he is and gets the most from his skill set.
THE FUTURE: Oliva profiles as an extra outfielder for most evaluators, but he has made a living out of exceeding expectations. he will head to Triple-A Indianapolis in 2020 with a big league callup in his sights. -
Track Record: Oliva went to Arizona as a walk-on after spending a significant amount of his career at Valencia High in California as a reserve. However, he started on a College World Series team as a redshirt sophomore and slashed .321/.385/.498 as a junior to catch the Pirates' eye.
Scouting Report: A strong spring training in 2018 earned him a spot at high Class A Bradenton, and he caught fire at the plate in the first half, hitting a combined .326 in the months of May and June with nine home runs and 29 RBIs. His production cooled off in July and August, but he still led the Florida State League in runs scored with 75 and finished second in stolen bases with 33. He has long limbs but good bat control and can tighten up his swing when he needs to. He has plus speed and a better than average arm and takes efficient routes to the ball, so the Pirates think he fits in center field for the long term. They also like his makeup and consider him to be a clubhouse leader in the long term.
The Future: Oliva will most likely start next season at Double-A Altoona, following in Bryan Reynolds and Jason Martin's footsteps as a likely fourth outfielder who aspires to do more.
