Dyer pitched alongside Mets farmhand Blake Taylor at Dana Hills High in Dana Point, Calif., then became an immediate contributor at UCLA, starting midweek games and relieving on weekends as a freshman. Then, he ranked second in the nation in appearances as a sophomore. He set up submariner Dave Berg well, then shifted into the weekend rotation as a junior but has had less success and figures to relieve as a pro. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder has power stuff in shorter bursts, with a fastball that reached 94-95 mph and a hammer curveball thrown with power in the upper 70s. His stuff has backed up and flattened out as a starter, though his competitiveness helps him in the role and he still gets his share of strikeouts with his breaking stuff, which is slurvy but still effective. Dyer's durability to this point should be an asset.
