Drafted in the 20th round (612th overall) by the Cleveland Guardians in 2017 (signed for $125,000).
View Draft Report
The Mets drafted Teaney in the 35th round after he led the state of California in strikeouts as a high school senior. Teaney kept getting swings and misses in college but also became a wild man, with 87 walks in 99.2 career innings to go with 121 strikeouts. He was demoted from the Toreros rotation after just two starts as a junior. Teaney's fastball sits 90-94 mph and he backs it up with two strong secondary offerings. His above-average curveball has 12-to-6 action and been described as a "hammer" while his changeup grades solid-average. Teaney's control is extremely poor however, even with a simple delivery out of a strong and athletic 6-foot-2, 200-pound frame. Some evaluators chalk his wildness up to lost confidence, which they hope can be restored. If it can, Teaney has the stuff and build to be a mid-rotation starter and could be steal as a late-round pick.

Teaney has a quick arm and plenty of athleticism, but his smallish 6-foot-1 lacks physicality, making many scouts content to let him follow through on his commitment to San Diego. His deceptive, funky delivery and high slot give him some deception, making his 88-91 fastball play up a bit, but scouts aren't in love with his mechanical, one-piece arm action. He has good feel for a 76-79 breaking ball with solid depth, and he flashes a promising low-80s changeup as well.
