The Pirates drafted Karas in the 24th round out of high school, and he got his most playing time as a junior at California, slugging 12 home runs. He has above-average power to all fields, with fringy feel for hitting that limited him to a .242 average with a 19-57 walk-strikeout rate this spring. He's a third baseman with solid-average arm strength and decent enough hands. He may be versatile enough to play the outfield corners and first base as well, and he played some second base in the Northwoods League last summer
