Drafted in the 2nd round (43rd overall) by the Oakland Athletics in 2017 (signed for $1,700,000).
View Draft Report
Deichmann ranked 404th on the BA 500 coming out of high school as scouts loved his power but knew he'd have to move off of shortstop as he matured. Scouts can feel a little easier about betting on his bat now after he's hit for power for two seasons with the Tigers--through mid-May he ranked second in the Southeastern Conference in home runs. Deichmann was buried on the bench as a freshman as he battled a foot injury, but became LSU's first baseman as a sophomore before moving to right field this year. Deichmann's plus lefthanded power is his calling card; he has above-average bat speed and uses his lower-half well to generate tape-measure home runs. There will always be plenty of strikeouts to go with the home runs as his swing tends to be grooved, but Deichmann also knows how to take a walk when pitchers try to stay away from his power. He projects as a below-average hitter, but one who could hit 25-30 home runs in a season eventually. Defensively, he should be solid average in either left or right field with average speed and some feel for running the bases.
TRACK RECORD: Bizarre injuries have plagued Deichmann since 2017, when he was hit in the face by a pitch as a junior at Louisiana State. He dealt with a combination of hamate, wrist and shoulder injuries in 2018 and 2019, but was healthy for the 2019 Arizona Fall League and hit nine homers in 23 games. That was enough for the Athletics to bring Deichmann to their alternate training site in 2020, and they added him to their 40-man roster after the season.
SCOUTING REPORT: Deichmann’s carrying tool is his plus raw power from the left side. He has the bat speed and lower body strength to hit 25-30 home runs in the majors, but it will likely come with a low average and elevated strikeout rate. Scouts have been concerned about Deichmann’s grooved swing since college, and he hit just .219 with a 30% strikeout rate at Double-A in 2019. Deichmann simplified his movements and made mechanical adjustments in 2020 to restore some athleticism to his swing in hopes of getting to his plus raw power more frequently. Defensively, Deichmann projects to be an average right fielder with an above-average arm.
THE FUTURE: The A’s were encouraged by Deichmann’s performance at the alternate site. Now he needs consistent at-bats—and to control the strike zone better—to build on it.
TRACK RECORD: Despite an impressive offensive track record coming out of Louisiana State, Deichmann has yet to stay healthy over a full season and injuries have impacted his performance. He finally appeared healthy in the Arizona Fall League, where his natural gifts began to show.
SCOUTING REPORT: After injuries limited Deichmmann to just 80 regular-season games, the LSU product showed what he can do by leading the Arizona Fall League with nine home runs. Deichmann profiles as a low-contact bat with high impact due to a lengthy stroke that produces plus power, an average exit velocity of 90 mph and a 17-degree launch angle. Deichmann does most of his damage against righthanders and will need to refine his approach versus lefties if he is to fill an everyday role. Right field has served as his primary home and his defensive profile should allow him to stay there long term.
THE FUTURE: Ticketed for Las Vegas in 2020, Deichmann's production befits the high-damage, lowcontact hitter en vogue in today's game.
Track Record: The Athletics drafted Deichmann in the second round in 2017 following a powerful year in the Southeastern Conference. He then showed everything scouts could want to see from a corner bat in his pro debut at short-season Vermont. Deichmann played so well in 2018 spring training that the A's repeatedly brought him to big league camp. Everything fell apart after that in a lost 2018 season.
Scouting Report: Deichmann dealt with right wrist issues all season that inhibited his swing. An early-season strain gave way to a fractured hamate that wasn't resolved until September surgery. Despite his lost time and offensive downturn, Deichmann still produced above-average power at high Class A Stockton and projects to deliver much more in the future. High-end exit velocities and double-plus raw power should translate to 20-25 homers annually, while a compact swing and knowledge of the strike zone should make him a near-average hitter. Deichmann has a classic right field profile with average range, a strong arm and surprising athleticism.
The Future: A return to health in 2019 should restore the luster to Deichmann's prospect status. If things go according to plan, he should spend ample time in Double-A.
A shortstop in high school and a corner infielder as a sophomore at Louisiana State, Deichmann moved to right field as a junior in 2017 and found his niche. He hit 19 homers, earning him All-America honors and a second-round selection by the Athletics. He signed for $1.7 million. The A's like Deichmann power stroke and his plate discipline. He had 28 walks and a .385 OBP in 195 plate appearances with Vermont in the short-season New York-Penn League. He's considered a mature player who knows his swing and what he needs to do to improve. With his inexperience in right field and merely average speed, Deichmann wouldn't rate as a plus defender at the moment, but his above-average arm gives him a chance to succeed at the position. Deichmann profiles as a classic power-hitting corner outfielder. It's not hard to envision Deichmann becoming a consistent 25-home run hitter in the majors. He figures to begin 2018 at high Class A Stockton.

Deichmann offers an intriguing package as a lefthanded-hitting middle infielder who has as much power as any middle infielder in the class. He hit a home run at last summer's Tournament of Stars and crushed two of the loudest hits of the summer during Perfect Game National. His stroke can be quick to the ball, and he has wiry strength and extension through contact. But he also swung and missed consistently on the showcase circuit with a grooved swing. Currently a shortstop, Deichmann is a below-average runner with fringe-average arm strength. He has soft hands and will likely move to second base, with third as an option. Some scouts see left field as his best position because his arm is short for third base. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder has an athletic build with a strong lower half and room to add muscle in his upper body. A team luring the 19-year-old Deichmann away from his commitment to Louisiana State, where his mother attended, is buying his bat and hoping he can make the necessary offensive adjustments for his power to play.
Minor League Top Prospects
One of the best power hitters in the 2017 draft class, the A's second-round pick showed easy lefthanded power in his pro debut, finishing in a tie for third in the league with eight home runs and finishing second to Ortiz in isolated power (.251).
