Draft Prospects
Scouts had circled April 21 on their calendars, planning trips to Ohio for one of the best high school pitching matchups of the season. But by the time that date arrived, Solon lefthander Matt Smoral was sidelined with a broken bone in his foot and Cherry's stock had plummeted to the point that some teams didn't even bother to crosscheck him. He's built like a righthanded C.C. Sabathia at 6-foot-9 and 260 pounds, but he lacks Sabathia's athleticism. Though Cherry has flashed some effective low-90s sinkers and touched 95 this spring, his control and command have regressed significantly. His below-average breaking ball is more of a slurve than a slider. There's still talent and upside with Cherry's huge frame and strong arm, but it's difficult to envision that he'll go early enough in the draft to buy him away from his North Carolina commitment.
