The Red Sox signed Tavarez when he was 18 years old out of the Dominican Republic in October 2010 as a second baseman, and he struggled early in pro ball, shifting to the outfield in 2012 and not reaching full-season ball until 2013. However, he made a significant jump in 2016, when he hit .335 at Double-A Portland to rank second in the Eastern League batting race. He also ranked third in on-base percentage (.379) and fourth in slugging (.506). The Orioles acquired Tavarez as a Rule 5 pick at the Winter Meetings. He's a plus runner but an inefficient basestealer who needs to improve his jumps, both on the base paths and on defense. He's primarily a left fielder due to his below-average routes and reads in center field. Standing 5-foot-9 and owning modest power, Tavaraz is a fine fit as a non-profile left fielder and could enhance the Orioles' recent Rule 5 draft track record, which includes Ryan Flaherty, T.J. McFarland, Jason Garcia and Joey Rickard, all of whom stuck with the organization for more than a year.
