The Angels bought Pastrone out of a Nevada-Las Vegas commitment with a $250,000 bonus after taking the Las Vegas high school product in the 17th round in 2015. After pitching in the Arizona League for his pro debut, the athletic righthander turned in a solid growth season at Rookie-level Orem in 2016. While he struggled at times with the more advanced hitters and tough pitching environments of the Pioneer League, Pastrone finished strong at the end of the season and in the playoffs, including six perfect innings against Billings to win Game One of the league championship series. Pastrone has arm strength and a quick arm that helps him get his fastball up to 96 mph, sitting 90-94. His separator pitch is a curveball, rated as one of the best in the organization, that he consistently drops in for strikes. He also has good feel for an improving changeup. While his delivery has some effort to it, it is clean and repeatable, and he works hard at his craft. Pastrone should be ready for his first taste of full-season ball with low Class A Burlington in 2017.
The Angels may have nabbed a sleeper in the 17th round of last year's draft by buying Pastrone out of a Nevada-Las Vegas commitment for an over-slot $250,000 bonus. The young righthander impressed in his Arizona League debut with a 3.26 ERA and 22-8 K-BB rate in 30 innings. Pastrone is still raw, yet he already throws with a loose arm action and a clean delivery. The fastball sits 86-90 mph with sneaky movement, and it was up to 92 during his Rookie-level Arizona League season. He has a slight, projectable build, so mid-90s velocity may be attainable as he gets stronger. His curveball is an average pitch now and should improve with better command. He's got good feel for a projectable changeup that's still a work in progress. Despite an easy delivery, he tends to overthrow at times. Pastrone will need another year of short-season ball, with a likely assignment to Rookie-level Orem in 2016.
