Recently retired shortstop Omar Vizquel already has moved on to become the Tigers' first-base coach, but in his one year working with Angels minor league infielders, he made an impact with Salcedo. Vizquel was one of the coaches pushing the speedy shortstop to take up switch-hitting again. After batting righthanded exclusively in 2013 extended spring training, Salcedo started swinging lefthanded in workouts, and before long brought it into games, showing a solid gap-to-gap swing in the Rookie-level Arizona League. Defensively, Salcedo is an average but generally reliable defender at shortstop, though he does have a tendency to take bad at-bats into the field with him. He shows an average arm most of the time, but he can unleash a rocket every now and then when he gets his feet set properly before he throws. Salcedo has a chance to be a solid utility infielder if he continues to develop and will try to earn a full-season job in 2014.
