When McHugh made his major league debut on Aug. 23, he joined a growing list of Mets big league pitchers drafted in the later rounds from college programs outside the national spotlight. The 2007 draft delivered Dillon Gee (21st round, Texas-Arlington); McHugh (18th) and Chris Schwinden (22nd, Fresno Pacific) hail from the 2008 draft; and Josh Edgin (30th, Francis Marion) is a product of the 2010 draft. McHugh shares a few similarities with Gee in that he mixes and matches four pitches and seldom strays from the strike zone. Where Gee's best pitch is a changeup, McHugh throws with a bit more velocity, as his fastball sits at 91-92 mph with tailing action. He spots the ball to both sides of the plate, forcing batters to consider inside/outside as well as up/down. McHugh's changeup features reliable sinking action, while he induces some righthanders to chase a mid-80s slider that breaks horizontally. Righties hit .202/.259/.320 against him in the minors last year. A slow 11-to-5 curveball functions more as a surprise pitch and is his weakest offering. Though he'll probably begin 2013 in Triple-A, McHugh could capably fill in as a No. 5 starter or middle reliever as needed.
