A 15th-round pick out of Angelina (Texas) JC in 2008, Gurka has made 109 career pro appearances, all but one out of the bullpen. He has gotten on the Orioles radar with three straight sub-3.00 ERA seasons, the most recent in 2013 at Double-A Bowie. Baltimore considered him for a 40-man roster spot in November after he pitched in the Arizona Fall League, but ultimately the club did not add him. Gurka has averaged 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings in his career with a solid, high-spin curve as a putaway pitch, but he has walked 30 over 60 innings at the Double-A level. Gurka throws a 90-91 mph fastball to go with the mid-70s curve and decent changeup. His arm speed on his change is solid, and that pitch made strides in 2013. He works with easy arm action but sometimes flies open a bit, and the inconsistent mechanics can lead to high pitch counts and too many walks. A hamstring strain ended his regular season in mid-July but he showed he was healthy in the AFL. He'll have a shot at the Triple-A Norfolk bullpen in 2014.
