Drafted in the 11th round (318th overall) by the San Diego Padres in 2017 (signed for $125,000).

When Chandler Newman was in high school, he was a hard-throwing righthander who didn't have much idea where his fastball was going from pitch to pitch. Two years later, the same scouting report applies. The hard-to-find arm strength was enough for the Indians to draft him in the 11th round out of high school, but he opted to head to Georgia Southern. He barely pitched as a freshman thanks to his wildness (11 walks in nine appearances that totalled only four innings). At Chattahooche Valley (Ala.) CC, he has been given more opportunities to get on the mound, but his wildness still keeps him from getting too much work. He lost his spot in the starting rotation after getting through the fourth inning only once in six starts. Newman can touch 100 mph and can sit in the mid-to-high 90s with his fastball, but at this time he's purely an arm strength project for a team willing to be patient.
