Edis Perez. Marte had some growing pains in his first exposure to full-season ball. Statistically, he only had one good month all year and righthanders were especially effective (.347/.436/.507) against him. But with long limbs, a good pitcher's frame and an exceptionally quick arm, there's still a lot of promise in Marte. Over the past year his velocity has taken another jump, and he's gone from sitting 90-92 and touching 94 to sitting 92-94 and touching 97. He also has a changeup that flashes plus and a fringy curveball. Marte's velocity comes with some effort and his delivery is not only long in the back (making it hard to repeat consistently) but involves a lot of load on his shoulder. He collapses his front knee at times, which causes his release point to drop, leading to further control issues. Marte was the Royals inaugural winner of the Carlos Fortuna award. The award, named in honor of the late Royals pitcher who died of cancer in 2013, is awarded to the Royals' minor league for working to improve their English, a dedicated work ethic and excellent conduct. Marte has the arm and the drive, now he just had to find control and a curveball.
