Drafted in the 3rd round (77th overall) by the Colorado Rockies in 2015 (signed for $740,000).
View Draft Report
A native of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, Medina moved to Arizona, but pitched only part of his senior year at Tucson's Sahuaro High before being ruled ineligible by the state athletic association because of visa issues. Despite that, scouts have seen enough of him to be intrigued by his potential. He doesn't blow hitters away with his 88-90 mph fastball, but it plays up thanks to his feel for the craft, command and ease with which he repeats his delivery. Medina has advanced feel for an effective curveball and changeup. Medina continued to throw for scouts after the premature end of his high school career, keeping the Arizona commit on the radar.

Minor League Top Prospects
A native of Hermosillo, Mexico, who moved to Arizona as a teen, Medina pitched only part of his senior year in high school before being ruled ineligible by the state athletic association because of visa issues. He got plenty of exposure in showcases prior to the draft, with the Rockies grabbing him in the third round and signing him for $740,000. Medina stands out for his pitchability, maturity, intelligence and competitive nature on the mound. While his results in the Pioneer League were inconsistent, he impressed scouts with his stuff and advanced feel for four pitches that he throws for strikes. He uses an easy delivery and keeps the ball down. Medina needs to add strength in order to bump up a fastball that sits 86-87 mph and touches 90, but he's got a projectable frame. The heater plays up thanks to the ease in which he repeats his delivery. Medina gets swings and misses with an average 72-74 mph curveball that he spins well with good shape, and added strength will give it more velocity. He delivers his changeup in the 77-78 mph range and also uses a slider that scouts did not often see.
