Drafted in the 4th round (107th overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018 (signed for $522,900).
View Draft Report
A 30th-round pick of the Twins out of high school, Eastman pitched three years in Fullerton's rotation and followed Thomas Eshelman and Connor Seabold in the line of Titans control-oriented aces. A 6-foot-3, 200-pound righthander, Eastman pitches with a fringe-average fastball but excels with his secondaries and above-average control. Eastman sits 88-91 mph and touches 93 with his fastball, which is mostly just a setup for his offspeed pitches. His curveball is an above-average to plus pitch with a spin rate well above the major league average at 2,800 to 3,000 revolutions per minute. His changeup is his best pitch, a plus offering with cut and fade. Eastman throws all his pitches for strikes and pitches with a competitive edge. That edge spills off the field sometimes, resulting in makeup concerns for some evaluators. Eastman's three-pitch mix and pedigree has him projected to go in the second or third round, like Eshelman and Seabold before him.

Track Record: The Phillies have a taste for polished Cal State Fullerton starters. They traded for Tom Eshelman after the 2015 season, drafted Connor Seabold in 2017, then in 2018 drafted Eastman, who signed for $522,900 as a fourth-rounder after spending three years in Fullerton's starting rotation.
Scouting Report: Like Eshelman and Seabold, Eastman's fastball is light by modern standards, but he separates himself from the others with swing-and-miss offspeed pitches. Eastman sits at 88-91 mph and touches 93, locating his fastball well with potentially above-average control. Ask scouts what Eastman's best secondary pitch is and it depends on the day they saw him, but both his curveball and changeup can miss barrels. His changeup has lively action and earns plus grades at times, while his curveball was inconsistent his junior year, but at its best it flashed above-average with a high spin rate and late bite.
The Future: The Phillies have shown a flair for squeezing extra velocity out of their pitching prospects, which would make Eastman more dangerous. Even with his current fastball and ability to manipulate his secondary stuff, Eastman could develop into a back-end starter with a chance to move quickly.

Scouts generally panned the Fresno area this spring, with Eastman as the lone potential prep expected to be picked in the first 10 rounds. At a listed 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, he has a pitcher's frame and has proved durable this spring while shouldering a heavy load for an 11-18 squad. Scouts report he's taken his turn every week and rarely exceeded 100 pitches but also rarely comes out of games. The Cal State Fullerton signee bumped 93 mph regularly as a junior and had a strong Area Code Games performance last summer, with one of the highest spin rates on his breaking ball in the event. This spring, he's pitched more at 88-92 mph with sink. His breaking ball flashes above-average, and his changeup has shown some life as well.
