Evans was a high school teammate of Diamondbacks righthander Archie Bradley at Broken Arrow (Okla.) HS. While Bradley has already reached the big leagues, Evans has served as a very reliable closer for Oklahoma as a freshman and again as a junior. His attempt to move to the rotation as a sophomore didn't work out nearly as well, as he became much more hittable. Evans locates his fastball well and shows good feel for spinning his breaking ball.

Minor League Top Prospects
Evans spent two seasons as Oklahoma's closer. He tried his hand at starting his sophomore year and was far less effective, going 3-5, 5.52. Fast-forward to Evans' first summer in pro ball, and the lefthander tried the same reliever-to-starter experiment again--this time, with far more success. After 10 relief appearances for State College, Evans finished the season with six consecutive starts and flourished in five of them. He works his fastball 89-91 mph with armside run, commanding it to all four quadrants. His fastball projects to sit in the 90s due to his large frame. Evans adds a 12-to-6 curve at 75-78 mph that grades as average but projects up a half-grade, and he mixes in a fringy changeup with fade. Some scouts say Evan has above-average present control, which he demonstrated with an excellent 42-to-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio. State College manager Johnny Rodriguez has coached top Cardinals lefthanded prospects Marco Gonzales and Tim Cooney as well as major league reliever Kevin Siegrist, and he said Evans compared favorably. "He has enough on the fastball," Rodriguez said. "He's got some deception in his delivery. He's a very tough kid.""
