Drafted in the 15th round (464th overall) by the Washington Nationals in 2015 (signed for $175,000).
View Draft Report
Mooney has been a key part of Maryland baseball's rise as a program. He's been a closer and a swing man for the Terrapins, and has outstanding raw stuff. His fastball works mostly at 88-91 mph, though he can touch 93 at times. Mooney's best pitch is his curveball, which breaks extremely late with 12-to-6 shape, and projects as an above-average pitch, though it sometimes flashes plus. The next step for Mooney will be refining his command and control of his arsenal. At times, he can get somewhat erratic and lose the strike zone. Mooney has bounced between starting and relieving, and some scouts feel that he could take off when he has more of a routine.
