Drafted in the 5th round (158th overall) by the Oakland Athletics in 2015 (signed for $300,000).

Illinois had a magical season that included a Big Ten Conference regular-season championship and 27-game winning streak. Duchene was a key piece to it thanks to a mean streak and competitiveness that suited him well to being the Illini's Friday starter, despite the presence of first-round arm Tyler Jay. Duchene pitches with toughness and moxie and doesn't back down from hitters. His stuff doesn't jump out, but he throws quality strikes repeatedly with an 87-91 mph fastball and can really locate his breaking ball, which scrapes 80 mph and sits in the upper 70s. He has a bit of a wrap in his delivery, but it hasn't hampered his control. He throws his changeup with conviction as well, giving him three average offerings he'll throw in any count. He ranked in the top 15 in the country in ERA (1.30) and strikeout to walk ratio (7.08). Durable at 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Duchene is an old-school type who rubs some teammates and opponents the wrong way but always seems to back up his words with winning actions.

Duchene was at the heart of Illinois' best season in program history last spring. The Illini's Friday night ace, Duchene went 11-2, 1.75 as the team won the Big Ten's regular-season title and reached the super regional round of the NCAA tournament for the first time ever. He signed with Oakland for $300,000 after Illinois was knocked out by Vanderbilt. He looked worn out in his pro debut after throwing a career-high 103 innings during the college season, but at his best he'll feature three average pitches with command. His fastball doesn't light up radar guns, operating at 87-91 mph, but he can locate it to all parts of the strike zone. The same can be said for his upper 70s slider and solid changeup, and he has an advanced feel to mix up his stuff along with a good, durable frame. Duchene has an edge to him that can rub opponents, and even some teammates, the wrong way, but there's no denying his competitiveness. After throttling him back during his first pro summer, the A's will get a better read on Duchene as he embarks on his first full season at one of their Class A affiliates.
