Drafted in the 17th round (496th overall) by the Houston Astros in 2014.
View Draft Report
The 6-foot-2 Texan became an immediate contributor at Coastal Carolina and entered his junior season off a summer in the Cape Cod League, but he had Tommy John surgery after six starts, clouding his draft status. After using a four-pitch mix last summer, Smith focused on three pitches this season and showed the potential to stay in the rotation. When healthy, his fastball sits 88-90 mph, touching 92, though fairly straight. Both his curveball and changeup showed average potential, and he has better feel for his changeup. His career control numbers have been subpar, walking 5.0 per nine in his career, and his arm action has length in the back and there is some effort on the front side of his delivery. But he does have a history of missing bats, with 9.1 strikeouts per nine.
