Drafted in the 3rd round (90th overall) by the Baltimore Orioles in 2014 (signed for $700,000).
View Draft Report
Gonzalez is one of the most accomplished high school players in the country, having won three consecutive state championships for powerhouse Archbishop McCarthy, which has produced Alex Avila, Nick Castellanos and Nick Travieso in the last decade. Gonzalez has present stuff and pitchability, while offering limited physical projection. His 87-90 mph fastball touches 91 and plays up with above-average life with downhill plane and gloveside run at its best. He shows feel for a changeup and a curveball that has depth, flashing above-average. Although he has a wrist wrap and plunge in the back, Gonzalez throws easily and is a natural strike thrower with the potential for at least average control. The 6-foot-1, 250-pounder has a strong, durable build made for handling innings. The Miami commit has the stuff and control to profile as a back-end starter.

The Orioles' top pick in the 2014 draft as a third-rounder, Gonzalez starred at Archbishop McCarthy High where he played for the Florida powerhouse that won three consecutive state titles. Gonzalez signed for $700,000, nearly $106,000 over slot, to pass up a Miami commitment. After struggling in his first full pro season, Gonzalez made big gains in 2016 as he repeated the low Class A South Atlantic League at age 20. His ERA dropped from 5.71 to 2.50 and his walk rate improved from 5.0 to 3.5 per nine innings. He improved his fastball command by using a cleaner, smoother delivery he streamlined with Delmarva pitching coach Blaine Beatty. Gonzalez pitched more on line to the plate and sat 90-92 mph and touched 94 while also throwing a plus changeup. His changeup features good arm speed with deception and shows late fade, and he is unafraid to use it in any count. His curveball is his third pitch and became more consistent. Gonzalez did a better job holding runners in 2016, but his fielding needs work. He earns raves for his makeup and some feel he could grow into more velocity. He should start 2017 at high Class A Frederick.
After signing free agents Nelson Cruz and Ubaldo Jimenez following the 2013 season, the Orioles didn't make their first selection in the 2014 draft until day two and round three. They selected Gonzalez with the 90th pick out of Archbishop McCarthy High, where he played for a powerhouse that won three consecutive state titles. Gonzalez signed for $700,000, which was $105,800 over slot. He impressed the Orioles with his maturity and advanced pitchability, flashing a little more velocity than he had in high school with a fastball that ranged from 88-92 mph and topped out at 94. He also throws a changeup and a solid curveball that could get tighter. All three pitches right now rate as solid average. Gonzalez felt his changeup was ahead of his curveball in high school because his dad would not allow him to throw a curve until he was 16. Former major league pitcher Alex Fernandez worked with Gonzalez's prep team, teaching him how to pitch inside and change speeds. Gonzalez could become a durable innings-eater because he has a clean, athletic delivery. He will likely open 2015 with low Class A Delmarva.
