Drafted in the 5th round (163rd overall) by the Atlanta Braves in 2014 (signed for $285,500).
View Draft Report
Diaz has helped Miami get back to the top of the Atlantic Coast Conference, earning first-team all-ACC honors with a 9-0, 2.32 regular season. He worked as a reliever as a freshman and again with USA Baseball's college team last summer, and he has the feel for a breaking ball to reprise that role as a professional if necessary. He fits in the first five rounds of the draft for a team that thinks he can be a back-of-the-rotation starter, however. Diaz has maintained his stuff and command all spring, though his stocky 6-foot, 195-pound frame could use more strength. He pitches with a below-average fastball that he must command to succeed, sitting in the 86-89 mph range and tickling 90. His changeup and slider both earn solid-average grades, and he gives teams another performance college option.
