Drafted in the 9th round (281st overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014 (signed for $143,600).

Krause was a critical part of Stony Brook's run to the College World Series in 2012, batting .330/.400/.430 as a freshman, most at DH. He moved behind the plate as a sophomore but his season was plagued by a broken hamate bone. He bounced back as a junior, winning American East Conference player of the year honors while leading Stony Brook to the conference title. Krause has a simple, compact stroke and the potential to be a fringe-average hitter with average power down the line. He hit .347/.435/.544 this season and controls the strike zone. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder has the physical tools to remain behind the plate, but he has not played back there full-time, also spending time in the outfield, and will need development. But he has a solid-average arm and is athletic for the position. He runs and throws well enough to handle right field and has posted at least average times in the 60-yard dash.
